Year 5/6 Learning Update

As part of the Economic Classroom Program, Year 5/6 students will publish a fortnightly article to share updates on their learning.

In 5/6 Inquiry, we have been working on an inquiry quest. An inquiry quest is when you choose a 'wondering' question and research to find out all about it. The questions can be about almost anything, like 'Why is the sky blue?' or 'What is the meaning of life?' My inquiry question is about the Bermuda Triangle and why so many planes and boats go missing there. The inquiry quest has been really interesting, and I’m excited to learn more about my topic! To complete the inquiry quest, you first brainstorm lots of questions you’ve been wondering about. Then, choose one that really interests you and that you’ll enjoy researching. Finally, begin your research using reliable sources. I recommend using Wikipedia, but not Google AI or AI Overviews, as they can sometimes give inaccurate information. - Evelynn L, Y5

This year, in Year 5/6, we have been taking part in a weekly Mathematics lesson called the Economic Classroom. It teaches us how to manage money, work hard, and handle responsibilities like paying rent, utilities, and even fines! The Economic Classroom has been running for a few years now, and it’s very helpful. Each student has a learning space job that earns them (fake) money, which they can use to bid in auctions for real prizes. Sometimes the prizes include things, like a Slurpee from 7/11 or a meal from Maccas! We also use a website called Banqer, which works like an online bank. Teachers can see our accounts and may fine us or remove money if we break rules. - Krystal T, Y6

In 5/6 SEL, we have been learning how to be good friendship coaches. We’ve been working in groups with students from our year level and gender, answering questions about scenarios like bullying or friendship fires and thinking about how to solve them. We also read a book about a girl pirate who faced a mean captain who thought boys were better than girls. The girl and her crew helped him during a storm, and by the end, one of the mean captain’s teammates joined the girls’ team. The story taught us that girls can do anything, and that boys and girls should always be treated equally. - Cindy T, Y5
