Grade 5 Yarning Conference

Darebin Schools’ NAIDOC Yarning Conference
Over the last few months, some of the Grade 5 students have been participating in pre-learning activities and learning all about indigenous culture and history as part of the Darebin Schools’ NAIDOC Yarning Conference.
As part of this unit of work, the students researched, read stories, had in depth discussions, and watched many informative videos. Some of the topics included learning about Aboriginal elders and their stories, looking at the Walk for Truth, and learning about indigenous history including information about Uncle William Barak. The students also made their own posters that tied in with this year’s NAIDOC theme, ‘The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy’.
To share our learning with other schools across Darebin, the students participated in a day full of learning activities, listening to guest speakers, and taking part in a special smoking ceremony. A highlight of the day was when our Grade 5 students participated in a planting activity. The students had a great time planting and learning all about the various types of native Australian plants.
A highlight of the day for many was participating in our very own ‘Walk for Truth’. The students took part in a walk together with the posters they created throughout the Yarning Conference sessions. These posters will soon be on display at Darebin local libraries!
The students have worked so hard throughout the year to develop their understanding of this incredible culture. Darebin put on a fantastic day for the children and gave them a wonderful opportunity to celebrate their learning.
