News from the Italian Rooms

Salve!

We are nearing the end of the school year and things are really ramping up!

The Preps have been dreaming ‘Sogni D’Oro’ (Sweet dreams) and counting pecorelle (sheep), after reading about a cheeky little girl who wouldn’t go to sleep. For the remainder of the term, we’ll be diving into the world of Dinosauri! Can you guess what these dinosaurs are in English - il Tirannosauro, il Brontosauro, il Pterodattilo and il Velociraptor?

Grade 1 children began the semester with the celebration of ‘La Festa di Pollicino’, a fairytale of a group of animals on their way to Pollicino’s Birthday party. The children joined in the reading of the story and learned how to tell the time in Italian through our game, “Che Ore Sono, Lupo?” (What’s the time, Wolf?). To finish the year, we’ll continue with the exciting theme of Dinosauri!

Grade 2 started the semester with learning the names of Animali Domestici (Pets). They wrote simple sentences describing their chosen animal’s colour, size, and characteristics. Their posters look fantastici! We are now focusing on the topic of La Famiglia, extending our vocabulary of family and using aggettivi (adjectives) to describe our family members. In the coming weeks, you may hear children singing ‘La Famiglia Addams’ (The Addams Family) around the yard and at home!

Grade 3 also explored animals, this time focusing on Animali allo Zoo (Zoo Animals). The students discovered that many animal names sound very similar to English, which helped them write wonderful “Chi Sono?” (“Who am I?”) posters describing their animal’s colour, size, characteristics, habitat, and diet.  To end the year, we’ll be extending our knowledge of numbers in Italian - counting to 100 and beyond, spelling number-words, as well as doing simple equations in Italian.

Maths has also crossed over in Italian for the Grade 4 students. We started the semester with learning how to tell the time in Italian and describing our daily routines. For the remainder of the year, we’ll be exploring Italia itself, discovering more about its geography, culture, and traditions.

Grade 5 students have been expanding their Italian vocabulary by learning the names of different rooms in the house and writing simple sentences that describe where family members are located. Building on this learning, the students will now take on an exciting new challenge, memorising a poesía (poem) in Italian. To bring their poems to life, they will also create a short movie showcasing their recitation and creativity.

Grade 6 students have been learning to write about themselves, their friends, and their families in Italian.  Some of the students took their learning further by selecting a celebrity to describe. They had fun using complete sentences to showcase their growing language skills. Like the Grade 5 students, they are now memorising a poesia (poem) to recite to their classmates and teacher, helping them build confidence in pronunciation and expression.
