Grade 2 Report

Geography

As part of our Grade 2 Geography unit this term, students have been learning about Australia and describing its location in relation to the world.

Using geographical tools such as atlases, globes, and digital applications like Google Earth, they have explored and named the continents, oceans, Equator, North and South Poles, and the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

A highlight was our discussion about why Australia is often called ‘Down Under,’ followed by a fun group activity where students created actions and chanted along to Down Under by Men at Work. We’re looking forward to more marvellous weeks of learning ahead. Students are particularly curious to discover whether toilet water really flushes in opposite directions in each hemisphere!

We have also continued learning about Australia through our Literature and ICT units. In Literature, we have been reading Are We There Yet? by Alison Lester. As a class, we have been following Grace and her family’s adventures around Australia, discussing the wonderful places they visit in each state and territory. As we read, we are revising the names and locations of Australia’s states, territories, and capital cities.

To extend their learning, students have started creating PowerPoint presentations focusing on each state and territory. They are researching famous landmarks, maps, flags and native animals using both the internet and atlases. The students have really enjoyed discovering Australia’s many iconic landmarks and sharing their own travel experiences of these places if they have been lucky enough to visit them.
