Last week, some of the Grade 1, 2 and 3 Sustainability Class Representatives helped to conduct a water audit at our school. The audit consisted of checking every tap, toilet and water-using appliance in the school for leaks or issues - this was over 100 different items to check. They identified the type of mechanism used to activate the tap/toilet and assessed they type of any drips or leaks. Conducting a water audit gives us a full understanding of where water is used around our school and helps us to plan water saving activities to be discussed and implemented by the Sustainability Group.

Reusable Water Bottles

When students bring a reusable water bottles to school, this helps us to conserve our water. When students use water fountains there is always water that ends up going down the drain, however when they use a reusable water bottle here is no wasted water. Reusable water bottles also ensure students have easy access to water when they need it. This is really important as the weather starts to warm up. Water Saving Tips for Home

When replacing taps, toilets, dishwashers or other water-using appliances, purchase models with a high water efficiency rating
Take shorter showers
Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth
Run washing machines and dishwashers with full loads (and use economy modes when possible)
Use half flush for the toilet where possible
Use rain water for gardening (or use a trigger nozzle) and water early in the morning or later in the day to reduce evaporation
Check for and fix leaks on a regular basis

Saving water not only helps our planet, but it will reduce your water bill too.
