A Message from the Principal

Dear Parents and Guardians,
I am writing to inform you about an important change that will affect all students under the age of 16 regarding their use of social media. From 10 December, a new social media ban will come into effect for children under 16 years old. This is part of a nationwide effort to enhance the online safety of young people and protect them from potential harms associated with social media use.
The ban means that students under 16 will no longer be permitted to access popular social media platforms unless they meet updated age verification requirements designed to ensure their safety and wellbeing. This measure aims to reduce exposure to inappropriate content, cyberbullying, and other online risks that can negatively impact mental health and learning.
Services that eSafety considers will be age-restricted social media platforms include: Facebook · Instagram · Kick · Reddit · Snapchat · Threads · TikTok · X (formerly Twitter) · YouTube
We understand how important it is for young people to stay connected and engaged with their peers, and that social media can be a positive tool when used responsibly. To assist you in supporting your children through this transition, I recommend exploring the following trusted websites that provide guidance and resources on safe and responsible internet use:
eSafety Commissioner https://www.esafety.gov.au/ This Australian government website offers practical tips for parents on managing children’s online activities, dealing with cyberbullying, and setting up effective parental controls.
Common Sense Media https://www.commonsensemedia.org/ A valuable resource offering detailed reviews of social media apps, games, and websites, helping parents make informed choices about their children’s media consumption.
Stay Smart Online https://www.staysmartonline.gov.au/ Provided by the Australian Cyber Security Centre, this site offers advice on protecting personal information and keeping devices secure.
We encourage you to have open conversations with your children about the new social media restrictions and the importance of online safety. Our school remains committed to supporting families in fostering safe, responsible digital habits.
Thank you for your ongoing partnership in ensuring the wellbeing of all our students.
Kind regards,
Simon McKinney
