Library News

Library Chronicles – Term 4, 2025.
What a fantastic start to Term 4! The library has acquired many new and wonderful books, games and other resources. We have commemorated World Teacher’s Day, changed our activities menu, and celebrated our own KHS Book Week.
Chess Club is now offered during Friday lunchtimes the warmup games have been very exciting and promise an exciting tournament! Thanks to our Chess Club Captain, Kieran Bennett, for his hard work on making Chess Club a reality.
You may have noticed our wonderful Spock (AKA Best Library Boy ever) on social media for World Teacher’s Day. The theme this year was ‘Hat’s off to Teacher’s’ and Spock, being the good sport he is, was happy to pose in his favourite hat!
Our Spring Reading Challenge is still going strong, (see information below) and participants should aim to finish their books and have the details to Ms Summers by the end of this month. As always, there will be reading rewards for our great readers.
Make sure to check out our many new titles, you can see these displayed in the library or on our Oliver homepage (via My School Library in your student portal).
We have a growing section of First Nations voices, and the range of titles is very broad. Don’t forget we have books displayed by genre as well as in the traditional manner – very useful when you are looking for a particular reading experience but don’t have a lot of time.
From now on, myself, Ms Williams and selected staff members will let you, our esteemed newsletter readers, know what we are reading each month. We love to talk about books so feel free to come and have a chat about the titles!
Ms Williams is reading Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell, which is a fictional account of William Shakespeare's son, Hamnet, who died at age eleven in 1596, focusing on his parents' grief. Mr McKinney is reading Michael Connolley’s The Proving Ground, a crime novel focusing on the often-murky aspects of modern technology and the impacts a lack of regulation in this area can have on the community. Ms Summers is reading Mullumbimby by Melissa Lucashenko, an award winning First Nations Bundjalung author from Meanjin.
We are currently celebrating belated Book Week at KHS. On Monday we painted books, on Tuesday we dressed up as favourite characters for photobooth pictures, a Scavenger Hunt was set for Thursday, and we finished off strong on Friday with a boisterous round of Book Bingo. Congratulations to our prize winners! (photographs to come next newsletter).
Coming up in Term 4 is our Spring Reading Challenge. Students read five books over Spring. For each book, they write a brief review and get to choose a prize from our lucky dip. Once a student has read five books, they go into the draw for one of our wonderful grand prizes. Please encourage your young person to get involved in this challenge, it is a fantastic opportunity to read, write and be rewarded for sharing a review and recommendation.
We will be hosting a range of events and cultural observances throughout Term 4, including AI Neuronext workshops, and will continue our regular activities – Maker Monday, Book Club, Lego Masters and Chess and Board Games – as well as adding new and interesting projects.
Happy reading,
Ms Summers, Ms Williams, and Spock (our Monday Library pup)
