November 2025
This term, we look forward to engaging our Prep to Year 2 students in a wide range of learning experiences across each of our Northern Bay College campuses. Our inquiry in HASS (Humanities and Social Sciences) will focus on the Biological Science unit - ‘What do plants and animals need to survive?’ During this unit, our Prep students will be learning all about ‘living things’ — specifically that plants and animals have observable features that can be used to group them in different ways.
Meanwhile, our Year 1 and 2 students will discover that plants and animals have external features that perform different functions to enable their survival. For example, in plants these features include roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruit, bulbs, trunks and branches while different features in animals enable them to move, breathe, eat and respond to their environment. Later this term, students will also participate in a range of learning experiences that will bring biological science to life!

Our Preps will attend a ‘farm incursion’ and Year 1-2 students will head out on an excursion to Ballarat Wildlife Park where they will be able to get up close with a wide range of animals.

In Literacy, we will continue delivering our phonics program, through daily phonics sessions which follow a sequentially designed sequence. We will also continue to develop mastery of handwriting skills, such as letter formation and correct placement of letters on dotted third lines. In addition to this, students will consolidate early writing skills through explicit teaching of sentence structure and punctuation. We look forward to celebrating some outstanding achievements in Reading and Writing with our Prep to Year 2 students as they conclude their year of learning with us this term.
Mathematics this term will continue to embed number skills throughout a range of units of learning. These units will cover addition and subtraction (part-part-whole), measurement (time and duration), as well as collecting and recording data. Students will also continue to explore open-ended problem solving tasks through weekly LES (Launch, Explore, Summarise) maths lessons.
