HASS / Inquiry

Year 3/4

This term our 3-4 students will move into the topic of Earth’s Resources.  We will explore the importance of rocks, minerals, soil and water as essential Earth resources. Students will investigate the water cycle, weather events and climate patterns and learn how human actions can impact Earth’s systems. Student’s work will culminate with an  ERP, picking a natural resource - water, rocks, minerals or soils to investigate.

Year 5/6

Our Year 5 and 6 students will learn about Earth and Space science. Students will explore day and night and Earth’s rotation before investigating geological processes, natural disasters, hazard prediction and technology. Student work will culminate with an ERP on a topic of student choice linked to either a geological process or natural disaster.

What you can to do support at home:

  • Discuss the current and forecasted weather.
  • Spend time in nature.
  • Observe the changes of the moon.

English

This term, our English learning will closely connect with our HASS unit that focuses on ‘Earth and Space Sciences’. Students will explore how authors explain scientific concepts and how text structures, vocabulary, and visual features help readers understand complex ideas.

Throughout the term, students will read a range of scientific and informational texts connected to our Earth and space. They will practise summarising key ideas, writing explanation paragraphs, and constructing cause-and-effect relationships in their own writing.

What you can do at home to support:

  • Read with your child every day.
  • Support your child in navigating and identifying relevant videos about Earth and space.
  • Encourage your child to record their wonderings or questions about Earth and space.

Mathematics

In Maths the 3/4 students will build their understanding of multiplication, division, fractions, statistics and probability.  Throughout the term, we will apply our skills to hands-on activities and investigations to help make learning fun and meaningful.

5/6 students will be using all four operations to solve problems. Students will continue to develop efficient mental and written strategies to support them during problem solving tasks. Towards the end of the term we will explore the coordinate system, using all four quadrants. Students will develop technical vocab to describe position and movement accurately.

What you can do at home to support:

  • When cooking, include your child in using measuring cups to practice using fractions in real life scenarios.
  • Practice times tables with your child.
