Year 7-9 Community

November 2025

Year 7 - 8

As we work towards the end of the year, Term 4 is often a busy but exciting term in the year 7 and 8 space. This term for English each campus has chosen a Film to study. With the purpose of analysing their chosen theme and forming an essay response towards the end of the term. In Humanities we’re learning about Economics and Business. With the focus being on understanding how different businesses work and how they sell a product to the masses. With the end of term assessment being a “Shark Tank” style presentation.  For numeracy this term, our students will be engaging in a variety of rich learning activities or LES tasks  to demonstrate their maths skills in different and exciting ways. Term 4 is also an assessment term and we are all looking forward to seeing how our students have demonstrated growth over the school year.

It has been a busy term for 7/8 with Humanities, students are studying inventors and innovators and in English we are studying Red dog, and how he brings the community of Dampier together. Part of the English studies are being able to  analyse the characters, learning that everything isn’t always as it seems and to not judge a book by its cover. So far in Humanities, we have learned that even small inventions or innovations can lead to something massive. We are learning how to make our own small business and create an idea or innovate something. As it nears the end of the school year the students are only working harder and harder to complete their work.

Year 9

Twenty-one Year 9 students with the highest attendance were invited to take part in a Future Leaders Day at the Brisbane Ranges and NBC’s Staughton Vale site. The day supported planning for the 2026 Year 9 Mentor program and gave students the chance to reflect, connect, and grow as emerging leaders.

The morning began with a solo walk from Stoney Creek to the historic Stoney Creek Reservoir, where students discovered the story of Australia’s first concrete dam — an important piece of Geelong’s engineering heritage.

Back at the picnic area, students wrote letters to their future selves to be opened in a year’s time, before teaming up to build rocket stoves and cook calzones over the fire at Staughton Vale. Despite the rain, spirits stayed high as students wrapped up the day by discussing insights from the Attitudes to School Survey and sharing their ideas for positive change in 2026.

Female students also had the opportunity to hear from inspiring guest speakers as part of the Be Bold, Be Heard program. These women shared their personal stories and discussed both the challenges and triumphs of their careers, encouraging students to find their voice and pursue their goals with confidence. Selected students also participated in equine therapy sessions, working closely with horses to build self-awareness, empathy, and confidence through hands-on interaction and guided reflection.

The term also saw the Year 9 Outdoor Education camp at Allenvale Mill, where students spent a night camping, surfing, hiking, and connecting with nature. The experience strengthened teamwork, resilience, and friendships — a perfect reflection of the energy and enthusiasm shown by our Year 9 cohort this term.

In the classroom, students have been busy exploring a diverse range of topics across their core subjects.

In Mathematics, they’ve been developing their understanding of 3D shapes and probability, applying their knowledge to real-world contexts and exploring how chance influences outcomes.

English students have been diving into dystopian creative writing, crafting powerful stories that explore control, freedom, and human resilience. In Humanities, the focus has been on business and economics, helping students understand how financial decisions, innovation, and enterprise shape our world.

Meanwhile, in Science, curiosity has reached new heights as students studied space and the lifecycle of a star, uncovering the incredible processes that drive our universe.

As we approach the end of the year, students are looking forward to several exciting opportunities — including Step Up Week, where they will experience their Year 10 classes for the first time, a VR Water Safety Training program, a fun-filled day at Adventure Park, and a visit from author Mark Smith, whose novel they have been studying in English.

These experiences will provide a fitting and inspiring conclusion to a year filled with growth, learning, and leadership for our Year 9 students.
