Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Update

Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Update - Term 3

This term, our winter crops are finally coming to life! Planted in autumn, we're now harvesting peas, broccoli, radishes, broad beans, carrots, spinach, coriander, and more.

Students have been busy maintaining the garden by watering, planting seeds and seedlings, weeding, composting, and collecting eggs.

On rainy days, Prep and 3/4CA enjoyed a taste-testing session of fresh radishes, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, and carrots and created placemats. The 1/2s enjoyed a variety of book week activities inside due to bad weather. Last week the preps tasted fresh peas straight from the vine.

We’ve also started planting seeds from Asia, such as Rau Muong (Morning Glory) and Ca Phao Trang (White Radish).

A highlight was discovering a wood duck nesting in our gumtree. The 3/4 Students even made a small pond for the duck, and we’re hopeful for ducklings soon!

Sadly, we lost three of our chickens, Eggs Benedict, Red, and Black, due to theft. Our remaining two, now named Strawberry and Golden by the students, continue to provide fresh eggs. Eggs are available for $6 per dozen from the office, but due to demand, there is a waitlist. We hope to add new chickens next term after upgrading security in the coop and garden. The theft has been reported to the police.

We look forward to welcoming the 5/6 students for a fun morning in the garden this Friday!

Term 4 is going to be very productive in the garden getting our summer crops planted.
