Whats Happening in Grade One
The Year 1’s have had a busy Term 3, recently we celebrated Book Week and will be visiting Werribee Open Range Zoo on the second last day of school.
Mathematics
During Term 3 in Mathematics, students used a range of concrete materials to help them learn all about addition and subtraction strategies. Our students will now begin to use their strong knowledge of number facts to explore multiplicative thinking.
We also worked on 2D and 3D shapes, as well as learning about mass.
English
In English, students are learning about Information Reports. When reading, students are working on identifying the structure of an information report, their use of nouns, pronouns and descriptive vocabulary.
We will be continuing to extend our students phonemic and phonological awareness skills this term. This term students have been learning about the following sounds (phonemes) /oi/, /oy/, /a_e/, /i_e/, /o_e/, /e_e/, /gn/, and /kn/.
Future Focused Learning
During our Future Focused Learning sessions this term our Grade 1s have been curious little Scientists! They have learnt to identify and describe the external features and basic needs of living things, as well as describing how different places meet the needs of living things. Through the use of the text ‘The Mess that we Made’ students have seen first hand the devastating impacts of rubbish waste on the planet and have suggested ways to help the environment.
Each class has started their very own Veggie Garden planting carrots, snow peas and lettuce- we are all very eager to give them a taste! To celebrate this learning experience students will be researching and creating a diorama about their favourite animals at the end of the term.
Warmest Regards,
The Year 1 Team
