Year 10 Environmental Science Assessment Task Success!
Looking at the four global systems can be a bit bland; however our year 10 students came up with an exciting way of showing their knowledge. An inquiry learning task designing and making a terrarium has brought life to this content and our students are seeing it right before their eyes.
A Moccona jar is the perfect sealed container; rocks, sand and soil the substrates of choice. Adding water allows for the hydrolytic cycle to take place and a selection of organisms such as moss, orchids succulents and leafy air plants finishes the tiny ecosystem. Each student created their own Moccona Terrarium, which they can now keep. All terrariums made were assessed at an at or above standard.
Well done year 10 Environmental science students!
A group of year 10 students visited Kangan TAFE in Docklands, and their state of the art automotive education centre. They learnt about careers in the automotive industry including mechanic and auto electrician and the necessary courses. They tried a few small tasks about how to diagnose car problems, sat in many different types of cars and asked many great questions.
At the Broadmeadows campus, students attended TAFE to find out about childcare, animal care, horticulture and lab sciences. They learnt about the courses and what they learn during it. They made rope dolls and bandaged animals. It was an interesting day with some potential future career ideas.
We celebrated great progress report results with our year 10 and 11 students. These students were the top students in their year level for learning behaviours, and respect.
In this Year 11 Food Studies project, students collaborated in pairs to design and create a menu for a VCE party, focusing on bite-sized dishes made from minimal processed ingredients and catering to various dietary requirements.
The project involved working through the entire product development process, from writing design briefs to prototyping recipes, collecting data, and making adjustments based on feedback. This project not only honed their practical cooking skills but also deepened their understanding of food design principles and the importance of meeting diverse dietary needs.
Additionally, the experience emphasised the significance of collaboration, with students working as part of a larger team to critique and provide feedback to their peers, fostering creativity and teamwork, both essential skills in the kitchen and beyond.
Throughout Term 3 Swinburne University's mentors are playing a crucial role in supporting our Year 12 VCE students by providing personalised mentoring in preparation for exams.
Students were offered an excursion to Swinburne Hawthorne Campus to see and experience University life, while engaging in educational opportunities which included Robot Construction, Flight Simulators, and Mock Legal Trials. This was a great way for students to immerse themselves in what could be future pathway opportunities.
This partnership is helping students navigate the pressures of final year studies, offering tailored advice on study strategies, time management, and exam preparation. By fostering a supportive and motivational environment, these mentors not only enhance academic performance but also build students' confidence and resilience. Their dedication ensures that students are better equipped to handle the challenges of VCE and to achieve their full potential.”
