NSGTA Season 1 Tennis Cup

Recently, I have participated in the NSGTA Season 1 Tennis Cup, playing for Fawkner/Glenroy. It was a great honour for me to play in the cup as I enjoyed every second of it. I was new to the people there at first, and it was my first real tennis tournament. I had lots of fun as I got to learn new tennis skills and strategies. Every time we won a match, I felt as though I was improving at Tennis, and I honestly think I did improve quiet a bit. As we started getting to the quarter-finals, it started getting harder, but we still managed to succeed. When we reached the semi-finals, we were ready to win, we tried our best and did awesome, ending it with lots of laughter and enjoyment.

However, as we reached the finals, we started practicing more and were finally ready. When the finals came, we started with a nice 30-minute warmup, had a drink, and we were ready to go. As we faced the other team, we were winning, but the matches were lasting nearly triple the amount of our normal match times due to how intense it became. By the end, our scores were so close, and it was all relying on one match. There was a large crowd watching as the last 4 people were finishing off their match against each other. Even though we won more rounds than them, their overall score was higher than ours, making the Glenroy/Fawkner Team Runners Up, with the scores being barely apart.

Math and DigiTech Olympics

What an amazing day! 70 students from grades 4 and 5 attended Glenroy College from Pascoe Vale North Primary School, Glenroy Central Primary School, Glenroy West Primary School, Dallas Brooks Community Primary School, Oak Park Primary School, Belle Vue Primary School and Fawkner Primary School for our Math and DigiTech Olympics!  The energy and excitement from both staff and students while participating in the activities was fantastic.  The activities were fun and interactive such as playing math games, Micro Bits robotics, Lego Bridge Challenge and Balloon Estimation.

The overall winner of the second time running Olympics was awarded to Pascoe Vale North Primary School where they were awarded the winning plaque and Gold Medal given we just had our Olympics in Paris.  There was a sausage sizzle with vegetarian options and yummy hot chocolates provided at lunchtime in our student Café.  Lots of fun and interactive games were played outside such as Jenga and hackey sack.  Some quotes from students on the day were;

“I can’t wait to come to High School as it’s not scary like I thought!”

“My favourite part of the day was having a yummy lunch and meeting other kids from different primary schools and playing games together especially in the coolest cafe!”

“Loved the bus ride to Glenroy College and estimating how long it would take to get there”

“All the activities were fun and loved estimating how far the balloon would go,”

“All the staff were so friendly and can’t wait to come to Glenroy College in 2 years!”

Well done to Pascoe Vale North Primary School for being the overall winners, but as some students said after the announcement, “We didn’t need to win as it was an awesome day of fun!”

Vocational Mentoring Exchange 2024-2026

Since its inception in 2021, VME has provided crucial support to 711 disadvantaged and vulnerable young people, helping them navigate the challenging time from school to work. With the dedication of over 130 volunteer mentors, VME has partnered with 13 schools and community organisations, successfully implementing 41 vocational mentoring programs across the region.

One inspiring story is that of Cloe, a Year 11 student at Glenroy College, who discovered her passion for plumbing through VME’s Mentoring Matters program. Initially uncertain about her future, Cloe was paired with her VME mentor, Harriet, who encouraged her to explore various career options. Through participation in an industry tour and work placements, Cloe found a previously unexplored interest in plumbing. Her mentor’s guidance and the support of industry partner, New Plumbing Solutions, transformed Cloe’s perspective on her career possibilities.

Cloe's teacher, Claire, observed the significant impact of the mentoring program: "The mentors opened my students' eyes to opportunities we could never achieve in the classroom alone. I wonder if Harriet, Cloe's mentor, realizes how profoundly she influenced Cloe's mindset?" Cloe’s transformation from uncertainty to confidently pursuing a career in plumbing—including changing her TAFE enrolment and securing a work placement—exemplifies the transformative power of vocational mentoring and industry exposure.

Excursion to Ice Skating: Celebrating Excellence

We enjoyed a morning to O’Brian Icehouse on Monday the 9th of September to reward our outstanding students with an ice skating excursion! This special event was designed to celebrate those who have excelled academically and demonstrated exceptional behaviour, earning Gold Cards for their positive conduct and excellence at school.

The excursion offered a fun and memorable day on the ice, providing an opportunity for students to enjoy themselves and bond with peers, while having a laugh with each other as we all learnt how to ice-skate.

Congratulations to all those who made the trip on all your hard work, and we hope you all enjoyed celebrating your achievements in a unique and enjoyable setting.
