Socktober

In Term 4, Year 10 students will lead Catholic Mission’s Socktober program for the St Joseph’s school community and will raise funds and awareness, designed to support those less fortunate in Mongolia. Last Tuesday, students attended the official launch which unpacked this year’s theme and what it means.

October is World Mission Month, with World Mission Sunday, occurring on 20 October 2024. On that day, the mystical body of Christ on earth gathers all her faithful to pray, partake in the Eucharist and share generously in imitation of Christ as we participate in the Lord’s mission. Pope Francis names the event a “banquet of the kingdom.” In his message, he puts before us the parable of Jesus in which a king invites others to the wedding feast of his son. When the stately guests refuse to come, he sends his servants into the streets. The feast is set, and he says, “Go and invite everyone to the banquet,” (Mt 22:9). This serves as the Socktober theme for 2024.

Bishop Michael asks us to be the light of Christ in everyday encounters, giving thanks, being grateful and helping those in need, showing kindness, respect and conducting ourselves with dignity. As we finish another successful term, let’s take a moment to reflect on the importance of treating each other with kindness, respect, and dignity, the values that are so needed in everyday society.

Whether you’re a student, teacher, or a family in our community, these values are crucial for creating a positive environment for everyone. Coming into Term 4, these are the values that we want to see in our students, staff and families, each day.

Why Kindness Matters

Being kind isn’t just about being nice; it’s about making a difference. When we show kindness, we brighten someone’s day and inspire them to pay it forward. This ripple effect can transform our school and community, creating a supportive network where everyone feels valued.

Respect Builds Trust

Respect is essential in any relationship - friendships, teacher-student interactions, and family dynamics. When we respect one another’s opinions and feelings, we create a safe space for open dialogue. This trust fosters collaboration and understanding, making it easier to tackle challenges together.

Dignity for All

Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, regardless of their background or beliefs. Recognising each person’s worth encourages inclusivity and strengthens our community bonds. When we stand up for each other and celebrate our differences, we create a richer, more vibrant community.

Let’s commit to being role models for kindness, respect, and dignity this upcoming term. Together, we can work to make our school and community a better place for everyone!
