Bilingual Fiesta

Newlands Fiesta
¡Qué gran celebración!
Well… Melbourne certainly gave us classic Melbourne weather, but that did not stop our incredible Newlands families! You showed up, rugged up, and brought the energy, proving once again that we truly are something special as a community. While the bouncing castles could not go ahead due to safety requirements, the kids did not miss a beat. The school grounds were full of laughter, running, jumping and playful energy all afternoon long.
We were honoured to have Andres Gómez Barba, education advisor of the Spanish Embassy in Australia, who officially welcomed Newlands Primary School to the ISA (International Spanish Academics) Program. Isn't this amazing?
A huge highlight was the vibrant sounds of the Cuban Son Band Bataola, who brought warmth to the day and had everyone dancing, clapping and singing along. It was impossible to stand still! We were also lucky to have the wonderful Lucy Patterson leading another fantastic salsa workshop. The excitement continues, with more Noches de Salsa en Español on the way. Stay tuned!
Events like this do not happen without the heart and effort of our community. So many parents and teachers generously volunteered their time at the stalls, helping create such a welcoming and joyful atmosphere.
And what a feast it was! From Chilean completos, Spanish paella and empanadas, to Colombian and Mexican delights with Donde Mama and Cumbé, there was something for everyone. Our ever-reliable Newlands sausage sizzle was a hit as always, and in a true Melbourne twist, the bar swapped sangria for mulled wine at the last minute. Do not worry, sangria will be back next time!
The sweets were just as memorable, with a delicious spread of cakes and Latin American and Spanish postres. Those homemade alfajores from Garufa (@garufa.australia) were definitely a crowd favourite!
A big thank you to Margaret and our amazing Grade 6 students for the face painting and photo booth, such a fun addition that brought lots of smiles.
We were also excited to welcome Duokiddo (@duo.kiddo), who shared their bilingual educational flashcards and helpful tips for raising bilingual children. Thank you Ina and Jorge for being part of the day.
A heartfelt muchas gracias to Luisa, the Spanish Committee and the PFA for bringing the Fiesta to life. Your dedication made it all possible.
And finally, to our Newlands community, GRACIAS. Every event like this reminds us that we are not just a school, we are a big, vibrant family.
