Being E-Smart Always: Helping Our Children Stay Safe and Kind Online

In today’s digital world, children are growing up surrounded by technology. From learning apps and online games to messaging friends and completing schoolwork, being online is

a normal part of everyday life. That’s why it’s so important for our students to be E-Smart—using technology in a safe, responsible, and respectful way.

What Does It Mean to Be E-Smart?

Being E-Smart means making good choices online, just like we encourage children to do in the classroom and playground. It includes:

  • Staying Safe – Keeping personal information private (like full names, addresses, passwords, and school details).
  • Being Kind – Using respectful language and thinking before posting or commenting.
  • Being Responsible – Using devices for learning and appropriate purposes.
  • Speaking Up – Telling a trusted adult if something online feels wrong or uncomfortable.

Why Is E-Smart Behaviour Important?

The internet is a powerful tool for learning and connection, but it also comes with risks. Teaching children to be E-Smart helps them:

  • Build positive digital footprints
  • Avoid online dangers such as scams or inappropriate content
  • Develop respectful communication skills
  • Feel confident navigating the online world
  •

How Families Can Support E-Smart Habits at Home

Families play a key role in helping children develop safe online behaviours. Here are some simple ways to support your child:

  • Have regular conversations about what your child is doing online
  • Set clear expectations for device use (time limits, appropriate apps and games)
  • Keep devices in shared spaces where possible
  • Encourage balance between screen time and outdoor play
  • Remind children that it’s always okay to ask for help

Helpful Conversation Starters

  • “What games or apps are you enjoying at the moment?”
  • “What would you do if someone online made you feel uncomfortable?”
  • “Can you show me something you’ve learned online this week?”

Our School Commitment

At school, we are committed to teaching students how to be safe, respectful, and responsible digital citizens. Through classroom lessons and daily practice, we encourage students to think carefully about their online choices and to support one another in creating a positive digital community.

Final Thought

Being E-Smart isn’t just about rules, it’s about empowering children to make smart, safe, and kind decisions wherever they go online. By working together, we can help our children build the skills they need to thrive in a digital world.
