Teaching and Learning
As we reach the busy heart of the term, I find myself reflecting on just how much learning at KCHS happens beyond just class work. Some of our most powerful moments this term has come when students have been given the room to create, take risks, perform and connect their classroom learning to the world beyond the classroom. It has been a genuine privilege to walk through our classrooms, workshops and spaces and see that learning come alive. I’d like to share a few highlights with our community.
Creative Writing Comes to Life
Our English team has run a wonderful creative writing focus this term, and the results have been a delight to read. Students across all year levels have experimented with short fiction, poetry and personal narrative, pushing themselves to find their own voice on the page. What has impressed me most is the courage on display — students drafting, redrafting and sharing work with their peers, learning that good writing is rewritten rather than simply written. The imagination in our classrooms is something to celebrate.
The Probability Carnival
Mathematics took a decidedly festive turn this term with our much-loved Probability Carnival. Students designed and built their own carnival games — from spinning wheels to dice challenges and card draws — and then calculated the odds behind every prize. The catch, of course, was that they had to ensure their games were fair (and that the “house” wouldn’t go broke!). It was a brilliant example of mathematics in action: laughter and friendly competition on the surface, and some serious thinking about chance, ratio and expected outcomes underneath. My thanks to our Maths teachers for turning a challenging topic into a day students won’t forget.
Vocational Education and Training (VET)
I’m thrilled to recognise the students who have made significant progress in their Vocational Education and Training (VET) studies this term. These nationally recognised qualifications give our young people real industry skills and a valuable head start on their post-school pathways. It has been wonderful to see students engaged across a diverse range of certificates, including Certificate II in Music, Certificate II in Outdoor Recreation, Certificate II in Visual Arts and Certificate II in Hospitality. Each of these courses blends classroom learning with hands-on, practical experience, and the growth in our students’ confidence and capability has been clear to see.
A particular highlight has been the work experience undertaken by a number of our Year 11 and Year 12 students. Stepping out of the classroom and into genuine workplaces, they represented KCHS with professionalism, maturity and enthusiasm, putting their skills into practice and gaining a real sense of life beyond school. Experiences like these help students clarify their goals, build networks and develop the workplace skills that no lesson alone can teach.
KCHS Talent Show
Finally, what a day the KCHS Talent Show was! Our hall was packed as students and staff took to the stage to share their singing, dancing, music, comedy and a few surprises in between. Behind every confident performance was hours of practice and no small amount of bravery, and our audience repaid that effort with enormous warmth and encouragement. Events like these remind us that school is about the whole person — not just what we learn, but who we become and the community we build together.
Looking Ahead
Each of these highlights tells the same story in a different way: when we give students opportunities to create, problem-solve, build skills and perform, they rise to meet them. Thank you to our dedicated teachers for making it all possible, and to our families for your continued partnership. I look forward to sharing more of our students’ achievements as the year continues.
