Our first-ever Primary House Chess competition took place last week. A total of 19 enthusiastic chess players from Years 5 and 6 competed over three lunchtimes. It was a tight competition with only two points difference between second and fourth places.

Final results were:

1st – Yarra 13.5 points

2nd – Sherbrooke 9 points

3rd – Wattle 8 points

4th – Marunari 7 points

Congratulations to all students who participated.

A special mention to the top scorers from each year level - Winston G and Duane J in Year 5 and Elliott N in Year 6.

Year 12 Psychology: Sleep Science Demonstration

By Mandy Bjelan (Year 12 Psychology Teacher)

Our Year 12 Psychology students recently enjoyed a sleep incursion run by Tom Gilbert from Monash University's Healthy Sleep Clinic.  This gave our students an opportunity to consolidate their learning about sleep science from an expert in the field.  Tom talked about the purpose of sleep, normal sleep patterns, how different sleep stages are identified and interpreted using specialised equipment, the effects of sleep deprivation and adolescent sleep patterns.

The highlight was seeing our class volunteer, Luke, get wired up to the portable sleep diagnostic device and observing his brain waves (EEG), eye movements (EOG), heart rate (ECG) and muscle tone (EMG) as he attempted to fall asleep in a quiet space adjoining the classroom!

The students really enjoyed seeing first-hand some of the things they'd been learning in class and hearing from someone who is involved in sleep research sharing their insights and experience.

Breaking Ground on New Senior Learning Centre

Earlier this month we officially commenced construction on its new Senior Learning Centre, with a sod-turning ceremony bringing together key partners in the project.

Attendees included John Lehmann, Managing Director of Becon Construction, along with team members Michael Audsley, Jason McCoy, and John Van Der Veen. They were joined by Roberto Merlo and Armani Jenkins from Smith & Tracey Architects.

Representing the school were Principal Peter Cliffe, Business Manager Liz Miko, and Project Manager Tom Denney.

The ceremony marked the start of a collaborative effort to deliver state-of-the-art facilities designed to enhance learning opportunities for senior students.

The project is jointly funded by the Australian Government through the Capital Grants Program and the Belgrave Heights Christian School community.

VET Students Master CPR

By Andrew Lockrey (VET Sport & Recreation)

Last week, our VET Sport & Recreation students proved they’ve got what it takes to revive the rhythm  — the human kind. In a high-energy CPR refresher session, they kept the beat, kept their cool, and kept hearts metaphorically (and literally) in the game.

From chest compressions to rescue breaths, students resuscitated their skills with precision and passion. The room was alive with the sounds of “Stayin’ Alive” (because yes, it really is the perfect CPR rhythm) and the occasional nervous giggle.

Training mannequins were the unsung heroes of the day—taking hit after hit in the name of education. There were moments of drama (“Is he breathing?!”), triumph (“We’ve got a pulse!”), and plenty of comic relief as students realised CPR is the ultimate full-body workout.

By the end, every participant left ready to spring into action, proving that when it comes to saving lives, this crew won’t skip a beat.

If you need CPR, don’t panic—these legends have it in the bag… and in the chest.
