Exploring Together

Recently, it’s been a joy meeting many of our incoming Prep students. At Good News Lutheran College, we value the partnership between families and the College, often beginning in Prep—your involvement makes a big difference! Thank you to all who’ve volunteered (especially for camps and excursions), supported special days, and attended events like Chapel, Assemblies and Showcases. These moments mean so much to our students.

If you have questions about your child’s learning or wellbeing, please reach out to their teacher, or connect with Mr Taravillo, Mrs Hussein or me.

Let’s continue to Create Success Together!

Book Week Visit to Amiga Montessori

During Book Week, the Year 6 leaders were invited to Amiga Montessori to read stories to the children there. They did a great job of bringing some stories to life and were presented with a very creative thank you poster made by the children. It is great to be able to partner with Amiga, as we have many children from the centre who come to GNLC in Prep. The leaders also enjoyed the delicious afternoon tea!

Year 3 Jewish Museum Visit

The Year 3 students visited the Melbourne Jewish Museum as part of their Christian Studies unit, investigating the connections between Christianity and Judaism. The students learned about the history of the Jewish people, as well as viewing special artefacts. They learned about Jewish religious celebrations and rituals. They also visited a Synagogue where they learned about how the Jewish community gathers together to worship.

Book Week - a Celebration of Books and Reading

Book Week was a terrific celebration of reading and books for all readers from Prep to Year 12.

Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 explored the birth of an undersea volcano with author Claire Saxby. Year 3 looked at Claire Saxby's Big Red Kangaroo book in a session on researching a non-fiction book. Year 4 linked with the NGV and participated in an online creative writing session with mystery author Jacqueline Harvey. Year 6 met action author Jack Heath and looked at how he edits his writing to make it more exciting.

Lunchtime activities included drawing Manga faces, Harry Potter origami and in the senior library, there was a literary quiz and a poetry typewriter.

The annual book week parade saw some fantastic, imaginative costumes by both students and staff at all levels of the school. Something for everybody!

Year 5 & 6 Hoop Time

On Monday 26 August, our Year 5 and 6 students headed to Eagle Stadium to take part in the Hoop Time Basketball competition against other local schools. We were thrilled to have eleven teams representing Good News Lutheran College on the day. It was fantastic to see so many students getting involved, showing teamwork, and enjoying the game.

A special congratulations goes to our All-Star Girls and All-Star Boys teams, who both won their competitions and will now progress through to the next stage, which is an outstanding achievement!

We also want to say a huge thank you to our student coaches for their time. The day would not have been possible without your support.

Well done to everyone involved!

German Mini Book Exhibition: Herr Fleißig und Frau Langsam

During Book Week, the Senior Years Library displayed a colourful and funny collection of mini-books created by our Year 9 German students. Inspired by the Little Miss and Mr. Men series, the books featured characters such as Herr Fleißig (Mr Busy) and Frau Langsam (Ms Slow), each with their own unique approach to household chores.

The project, originally completed in Term 1, gave students the opportunity to practise German vocabulary related to daily routines while expressing their creativity through storytelling and illustration. Each book explored which chores were done and how often. All books are written in German, include a vocabulary list to support readers, and reflect the students’ growing confidence in using German.

The library team will make the books available for all students to enjoy in the Junior School Library.

Wunderbar gemacht, Klasse 9!

Year 4 Poetry

In Year 4, we've been exploring the world of poetry. Here are some creative pieces written by our talented students:

Student-Led Conferences

In week 8 and 9, our students will take centre stage in their Student-Led Conferences. These conferences are a chance for families and students to explore learning together. Students proudly share their progress, challenges, and achievements, while reflecting on growth and setting future goals. Unlike traditional meetings, the student leads the conversation—making it a true celebration of learning.

The roles during Student-Led Conferences:

Student: Leads the conference, shares learning, reflects on progress, and sets goals.

Parents: Listen, ask open-ended questions, and celebrate achievements.

Teacher: Supports preparation and observes the dialogue.

Student-Led Conferences are designed to celebrate learning with your child. For any detailed discussions with teachers, we encourage families to connect at another time.

We look forward to exploring and celebrating the curiosity, effort, and growth our students have shown this term—together as a learning community.

Year 6 PYP Exhibition – All Families Invited!

We warmly invite the whole school community to join us for the Year 6 PYP Exhibition on Tuesday 16 September, 5.30–7.30pm in the Year 6 classrooms.

The Exhibition is the culmination of the PYP journey and a true celebration of student learning. Our Year 6 learners have been inquiring into the central idea: The Arts and Media can empower and inspire action. Through research, creativity, and collaboration, they have explored global issues that matter to them and developed possible solutions to share with our community.

This is more than a showcase — it is an opportunity for us to explore together the big questions shaping our world and to celebrate the knowledge, passion, and action of our Year 6 students. We look forward to seeing you there!

Raising Body Bright Children

LIVE WEBINAR - last chance to share with your school families!

Support for children's body image

Children today are growing up in a world where appearance pressures start far too early. Parents and carers naturally want their children to feel confident and comfortable in their bodies, but it’s not always easy to know how to help.

That’s why Butterfly is inviting parents of primary age children to a live, virtual seminar designed to provide the tools, knowledge, and confidence to nurture a positive body image and a healthy relationship with eating and physical activity, right from the start.

In this practical, engaging session, parents will learn:

  • How body image develops in primary-age children
  • Common risk factors for body dissatisfaction and how to reduce them at home
  • Everyday ways to be a positive role model around eating and physical activity
  • The importance of the language used around bodies and appearance
  • How to respond if you notice body image concerns
  • Where to find help and support if needed.
