Physics Fun Day

Written by Sammy & Naomi!
On Tuesday, we ventured into the city to visit Quantum Victoria, where we had the pleasure to experience “Physics Fun Day”! With the company of another school, we explored the principles of physics through a variety of immersive experiences and investigations.
The day started off with a range of activities that allowed us to explore the fundamental principles of motion. A few of the many scientific principles investigated included inertia, which was displayed in a tablecloth experiment, as well as Bernoulli's principle, which was explored by blowing air against ping pong balls to observe how air moves around objects. Possibly the most interesting activities were the ones investigating magnets, where we were able to explore the relationships between magnetic poles and their magnetic fields. It was really cool to see how different materials attracted or propelled each other.
The next rotation focused on electricity, the movement of electrons demonstrated through a Van de Graaff generator. Groups inspected how electricity passed through a range of materials, balloons, aluminium, and a variety of different fruits. In this rotation, we also used teamwork to control a car in a video game by connecting circuits through physical touch, which was really interesting — and lots of fun!!
Finally, the third rotation involved model cars (with clay passengers), giving a thought provoking insight into the dangers of different collisions, with advanced technology allowing us to observe the velocity and acceleration of these cars in different scenarios.
A big thank you to the welcoming staff at Quantum Victoria, as well as the amazing teachers Mr Mete and Ms Smith who organised the excursion!!
