Learning & Teaching in Sport

How lucky we are to have had such lovely weather this term. We have been able to have all of our lessons outside and the children have enjoyed the sunshine.

Prep:

We have been learning basic ball skills in tennis and how to use the racquet safely.

The students learnt to underarm throw the low bounce balls and catch on the full in a cone or bucket. They learnt to use a stop sign method to hit the ball over the net when it was thrown underarm to their racquet (this is practice for Volleys). They also learnt to splat the ball when it was being rolled to them and stand side on to tap the ball to a partner. They practiced hitting the ball up and down using the racquet and had some time to hit over our tennis hotshots nets.

The students are now learning soccer - how to keep the ball close to their feet when dribbling and not to rush and how to pass the ball to a partner with the inside of their foot and how to shoot a goal with the inside of their foot.

Overall we are having fun learning new skills each week.

Year 1/2:

This Term we have been learning tennis skills such as splatting the ball, passing the ball to a partner while standing side on and how to stop signing the ball over the net from an underarm throw. (This is practice for Volleys). The students have enjoyed hitting the ball up and down using the racquet and having a go at hitting the ball gently across the hotshots tennis nets.

The students are now learning soccer. The lessons usually involve some skills work, followed by a small game. Some students play regularly out of school and love to show the other students how they dribble the ball and juggle it. They have learnt to keep the ball close to their feet and keep control of the ball. The students have had a go at kicking goals with the inside of their foot and trying to aim their foot in the right direction.

The children are enjoying learning new skills each week and sharing their skills as well.

Year 3/4:

Students have been learning tennis skills using the Hotshots nets and low bounce balls. Some students are very good at bouncing the ball up on the racquet and others are good at bouncing down. The students use bounce serves in Hotshots and learn how to regulate the speed of the ball when hitting across the net. Some students work on direction of the ball, while others work on getting it over the net. The students played singles, double and American doubles over the three weeks.

Last week we started learning Kanga Cricket. There is a 3/4 Kanga Cricket Gala Day on Friday 31st October for those students still deciding if they like Kanga Cricket or not.

Kanga Cricket is played with a partner. When bowling (overarm bowl) one person bowls 6 balls the other wicket keeps and then they swap over. When batting they work together for 2 overs. If someone goes out they change ends. It is a great game as everyone gets to bat, bowl, be wicket keeper and field. After we have learnt the rules of the game the students who want to play will be coached by senior students to help prepare them for the day.

Students who did well in our School Athletics will represent the school at District Level on Monday 1st September at Knox Athletic Track. We congratulate them on getting to this level and  wish them every success and hope they do the best for themselves.

Year 5/6

The students have been playing tennis Hotshots in preparation for our Hotshots Gala Day on Friday 12th September at Clarinda Tennis Club. We are very lucky to have this club to support our District. For three weeks the students played hotshots against each other and 1 team of girls and 1 team of boys were chosen to represent the school on Friday 12th of September.

Last week we started learning Sofcrosse. It is a modified version of Lacrosse and the students enjoy learning a new skill. They learn to scoop the ball to pick it up, throw the ball up and down depending on what they want to achieve. Cradle the ball when running and throw and catch with a partner as well as bounce the ball through the goals.

Students who did well in our School Athletics will represent the school at District Level on Monday 1st September at Knox Athletic Track. We congratulate them on getting to this level and wish them every success and hope they do the best for themselves.

Have a great rest of the Term.

Yours in Sport,

Sue Tobin.
