Mandarin News

This term in Mandarin students across all year levels are engaging in exciting language and cultural learning experiences.
Foundation students are learning to identify and name family members, as well as explore the Chinese zodiac animals. Through songs, games, and hands-on activities, they are building vocabulary and confidence in using Mandarin to talk about their loved ones and the animals of the zodiac.
Year 1/2 students are learning to name and describe parts of the body using words, such as head, eyes, hands, and feet, and are beginning to use simple phrases to express size and quantity. Students are practising their speaking and listening skills through interactive games, songs, and drawing activities. A highlight of the unit will be designing and describing their own imaginative monster using Mandarin sentences. In the final week, students will reflect on their learning and provide feedback to help shape future Mandarin lessons.
Year 3/4 students are exploring the topics 'My Pets' and Animal Habitats. They are learning to name pets and wild animals and describe their appearance, habitats, and diets using simple Mandarin sentence structures. Students are strengthening their vocabulary and fluency through speaking, listening, reading, and writing tasks. The unit will end with a creative poster project where students introduce an animal in Mandarin and present it to the whole group.
Year 5/6 students are focusing on describing people and their personalities. They are expanding their descriptive language by learning a range of adjectives, sentence structures, and conjunctions. As a final task, students will create and present a job advertisement in Mandarin for an actor or actress, showcasing their creativity, fluency, and understanding of persuasive and descriptive writing.
Mandarin Club runs every Tuesday lunchtime in the Mandarin room, where students enjoy fun, hands-on craft activities linked to Chinese culture. Everyone is welcome!
