Winter Safety

Bring on the school holidays with some nice snow on the mountains to keep us active, happy and enjoying the outdoors this break!

Winter sports such as skiing and snowboarding along with snow play and tobogganing carry risks of injury and other safety concerns. The most common causes of injury, falls and collisions can be reduced with common sense and proper planning, preparation and equipment.

Some top tips:

· As with all sports, basic protective gear, such as a helmet – can dramatically reduce your risk of serious injury.

· Always check weather conditions before you set out. Avoid extreme weather conditions such as snowstorms.

· Never participate in winter sports alone. With a partner (or two), you can use the 'buddy system' to look out for each other – for example, to check each other for signs of hypothermia.

· Remain hydrated, drink plenty of water before, during and after sport.

· Carry some snacks or energy bars as fatigue increases the risk of injury.

· Don't push yourself to exhaustion. Rest at regular intervals to avoid fatigue-related injuries.

· If you are lost, retrace your steps. If you can't retrace your steps, seek shelter and wait for help.

· Respect the Alpine Responsibility Code and any rules of the mountain.

· Give way to people below and beside you on the hill. It is your responsibility to avoid them.

· Reduce your risk of cold -related injuries include frostbite, hypothermia, muscle sprains and strains, 'snow blindness' and sunburn. Many of the risks can be reduced with planning, adequate preparation and proper equipment.

· And finally avoid getting to the stage of: “Mumbles, stumbles or jumbles!” If you or your buddy is at this stage, seek warmth, shelter and some time out!
