VCE Biology

In Unit 1 of Biology, students study how the plasma membrane contributes to survival by controlling the movement of substances into and out of the cell. In this Biology practical, a cellulose membrane modelled the cell membrane and students investigated the movement of water, glucose (a small molecule), and starch (a very large molecule) across the membrane via osmosis and diffusion.

Year 12 Chemistry

In the first half of Unit 3, Chemistry students focus on analysing and comparing a range of fossil fuels and biofuels as energy sources for society. In this practical, students compared the energy released from three different fuels. The fuel was burnt and used to heat water. The energy required to heat the water can be calculated using the temperature of the water before and after heating and this can then be used to see how much energy was released from each fuel.
