Inquiry

Science   I   Technology   I   Humanities    I    General Capabilities

Our Inquiry topic this term focuses on the essential question 'How can we help living things thrive?' We will learn about what living things need to not just survive but thrive. We will identify what makes something living and how we can group or classify them, how they interact with other living things in their environment and what impact humans have on them.

Over the next few weeks, our Year 3 students will each receive a small yeast starter to care for and grow at school. Throughout the process, they will observe the changes in their yeast and learn how to nurture a living organism by following simple care routines. Later in the term, students will use their healthy yeast starter as part of an exciting hands-on learning experience. This activity will provide opportunities to investigate how living organisms grow and change while developing responsibility through caring for a living organism. As part of this unit, we will also welcome a professional baker for an incursion, where students will learn more about growing, nurturing and using yeast in baking.

Students will take on the exciting role of wildlife creators and presenters by designing their own unique living animal. They will think carefully about its habitat, diet, adaptations, life cycle, and special characteristics before bringing it to life through a short documentary-style video. Like mini David Attenboroughs, students will film and narrate their creations, explaining how their animal survives, behaves, and interacts with its environment using scientific vocabulary and creative storytelling.

If you have any expertise in this particular Inquiry topic, please contact your child’s teacher to let them know how we can utilise your knowledge. We welcome any parents who would like to present to the cohort. This is a great way to utilise our school community and bring valuable resources into the classroom.
