Teaching & Learning

As we reach the end of Term 2 and Semester 1, we would like to congratulate all of our students on their hard work and commitment throughout a very busy assessment period. In particular, congratulations to our Year 10 and 11 students who recently completed their semester exams. These assessments are an important opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning, build resilience and prepare for future pathways.

Semester Reports

  • Semester reports will be released on Friday 26 June and can be accessed and downloaded through Compass. We encourage students, parents and carers to take the time to review these reports together and reflect on the progress, growth and achievements from the semester.

  • As the AEU continues negotiations regarding teacher and Education Support staff working conditions, some reports may not include written comments in the “Areas for Improvement” section. We appreciate the understanding and support of our community during this time. If you have any further questions about reports, please contact the subject teacher for more information.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

  • Excursions and hands-on learning opportunities continue to play an important role in supporting student learning and assessment across the college.

  • Our Year 9 and 10 Media students recently visited ACMI, where they explored film production techniques and used professional-level technology to plan and create a short film. This experience allowed students to apply their classroom learning in a creative and engaging environment.

  • Our Year 9 Technology students also attended the Whittlesea Tech School, where they used 3D printers to support the creation of their final assessment projects. Our ongoing partnership with the Tech School, including the Tech School Ambassador Program, continues to provide highly engaging opportunities for students to develop future-focused skills and explore innovative technologies.

The Premier’s Reading Challenge & Improving Reading Outcomes

Our students have enthusiastically participated in the Premier’s Reading Challenge, demonstrating a strong commitment to developing their reading skills and fostering a love of reading. The Challenge has provided students with an opportunity to explore a wide range of texts, discover new authors, and engage with reading both at school and at home. It has been wonderful to see students setting personal reading goals, sharing book recommendations, and celebrating their reading achievements throughout the year.

Improving reading outcomes for all students is a key priority. Through our review of student learning data, reading was identified as an important area for growth. As a result, in English classes, we have implemented a focus on strengthening reading instruction and building students’ reading proficiency. To support this work, teachers are currently engaged in professional learning focused on Reading Cycles and the Three Ways of Reading: teacher read-aloud, student oral reading, and accountable independent reading. This professional learning is grounded in the Science of Reading and draws on evidence-based approaches to the explicit teaching of reading, implementing structured practices that support vocabulary development, fluency, comprehension, and deeper engagement with texts.

The Premier’s Reading Challenge complements this important work by encouraging students to read widely and regularly, helping to build the knowledge, confidence, and reading stamina that underpin academic success. A special congratulations to Yolanda Wu (Year 7), who has extended her Premier’s Reading Challenge goal for the third time and is now aiming to read 50 books by September. Demonstrating her passion for literacy, Yolanda has also submitted a short story to the Insight Creative Writing Competition. Her commitment highlights the positive impact that reading can have on creativity, confidence, and learning. We congratulate all students who have participated in the Challenge and thank families for their ongoing support in encouraging reading at home. Together, we are building a strong reading culture and creating lifelong readers.

As we finish the semester, we would like to thank our students, staff and families for their ongoing support and commitment to learning. We wish everyone a safe and restful break and look forward to another successful semester ahead.

Best wishes,
