What's Been Happening in Year 1

Year 1s Get Hands-On with Science!

Our Grade 1 students had an exciting time during the Mad About Science incursion where they explored the fascinating world of material science. Through fun, hands-on experiments, they investigated the properties of different materials by bending, stretching, and testing their strength and flexibility. The young scientists asked curious questions, made predictions, and discovered how everyday objects are made from materials that are chosen for their special qualities. It was a fantastic opportunity to bring science to life and spark a love for learning!

What's Been Happening in Year 6

Melbourne Museum Excursion

6A - Niamh and Imogen

On the 2nd of September, 6A and 6D went to the Melbourne Museum. It just happened to be our birthday too! First we got to school and everyone sang Happy Birthday to us. Then we hopped onto the bus on our way to the Melbourne Museum. The bus ride was full of chatter and singing. It was so fun. When we got there we all went straight to a small room where we watched a few videos about climate change. Then we all got into groups of 5 to do small activities about things we can do to prevent climate change from getting worse. One of the activities was designing a protest poster on Canva to prevent climate change caused by humans. Then we went outside to eat our snack (and chase pigeons!). Afterwards, we went inside to have a look at the dinosaur exhibit. They were amazing and ginormous. The bones were so fragile looking and we all were gazing, wondering what it was like when dinosaurs roamed our earth. Then we moved to the  Dynamic Earth exhibit where there were so many rocks. There were real diamonds and giant Amethyst geodes. It was amazing. Dynamic earth was both of our favourite part. After this we moved into a dark room. BANG! A flash of lightning strikes the earth on the screen beside us. We all jumped and then giggled at our silliness as a TRex stomped through the forest and all the small dinosaurs began to scatter. We wandered into an even darker room, and all of a sudden small flashes of lights went on and there was a Triceratops skeleton, battered by age! We all looked at each other excitedly and walk around the glass circling the majestic reptile's skeleton. We learnt that the triceratops only eats veggies and plants, which means it’s a herbivore. Some kids thought all dinosaurs eat meat but it turns out the majority of dinosaurs are herbivores! How cool is that! Then we went outside to eat lunch and have a play underneath the trees. After lunch we went to the rainforest exhibit and went underground. We saw lots of fish in a glass window looking through the creek and different species of birds in the green ferns. We learnt a bit about ‘Black Saturday’ and how it affected Victorians. Then we walked happily out the door of the museum, our minds buzzing with exciting information. Then we hopped onto the bus home. It was the best birthday ever! Thank you to the teachers for planning such a wonderful adventure for the year 6s!

6B - Alex (Workshop)

The workshop was an extremely fun experience for me. When we first entered the workshop we watched some videos and learned about Climate Change. Then the staff displayed activities for us to do. I really enjoyed designing a poster for climate change because it was fun to create something to raise awareness about climate change. My favourite part of the workshop was when my group had to sort different food into the amount of greenhouse gases they produced.

6C - Peyton (Dinosaur Exhibit)

I thought the dinosaur exhibit was really interesting and fun. I learned some fun facts about fossils and how dinosaurs lived millions of years ago. I really enjoyed looking at the dinosaur fossils as it really showed me how big the dinosaurs were. The best part of the dinosaur exhibit was learning about the evolution of dinosaurs and how they changed over millions of years.

6D - Manuela

The Melbourne museum was an unforgettable excursion, where we got to learn, and enjoy our time exploring different things around the museum. After we explored the museum, we went through a door, which led to a forest where we got a gust of fresh wind and the smell of nature. There were trees, plants and little glass enclosures with different reptiles and bugs inside. The plants were all labeled, so we could also learn about different plants. The glass enclosures were really detailed with mini plants and perfect water level. Inside  the enclosures, we were able to see various animals, such as frogs, crabs and newts. When we walked a little further, we saw tiny capsules, where when you pulled the cover off the glass, you could see a bug. There was a giant spider in one, and the other one was a stick bug. After that, we went to a fun room where two people taught us about natural disasters. We watched a video that got projected onto the walls. It was about the world changing because of climate change. After the video, we got to do different activities, like making a poster to stop climate change, put plastic food in the box where it did impact the world, and some where it didn’t, and we also got to make a world where it included different things to keep the world healthy, like shelter and food for animals, and we had to make a party that was safe for the world. Lastly, we had to put different events on a timeline of the years, like electric cars and solar powered lights. In the end, we learnt that climate change was started by humans, and we are making it worse, but we can help the world if we make better decisions. Overall, I really enjoyed our excursion to the Melbourne Museum.
