Visual Arts News

Hello families,

We're excited to share another edition of our visual arts newsletter, giving you a window into the creative world your children are exploring at school.

Below, we will highlight the projects students are working on, share photos of their artwork, and celebrate their artistic growth and imagination!

Preps

Our prep students continue to learn about texture and overlapping with the start of a new two-week project,’ A Dinosaur Landscape’. After reading a story book, students were asked to use their imagination to create backgrounds using their knowledge of lines that they know, and also experimenting with layering and overlapping. Next week, the students will develop their dinosaurs to collage onto their backgrounds to complete the piece. Well done, preps, great start!

Grade One

Our grade ones have just completed a two-week project ‘Landscapes” in which the students were exposed to the idea of Foreground, Middle ground and Background. Students discussed how they can utilise space and these new conventions to convey depth in their artwork. We think the students did such a fantastic job.  What do Uwe think?

As they finish one project, our grades ones also embark on a new two week project this week. Creating ‘Cozy Creatures’. This project allows students to really explore the idea of texture in art and relate the idea of texture to their own world through paper weaving. We can't wait to see the final products.

Grade Two

Our grade two students have just finished their underwater submarine pieces this week. Learning about the deep sea and using watercolour to again experiment with overlapping and blending colours to create some magical underwater scenes.

Next week the students will learn about the art of weaving and how weaving is used in different cultures around the world. We look forward to seeing some amazing paper weavings from our talented grade 2 students.

Grade Three

Grade three students are working with the elements of colour, texture and form in their current art piece. Learning about how the way we use lines can take an image from flat on the page to 3-dimensional. Our students have drawn a hot chocolate cup with intentional lines and then completed the piece by adding in texture with the use of pattern and intrigue using vibrant colours.

Grade Four

Our grade 4 students are busy learning about Gustav Klimt and using him as inspiration in their current art piece. Gustav is best known for his use of metallics along with layered swirls and symbols throughout his artwork.

Our students are using this inspiration to create and fill pumpkins with symbols of things meaningful to them. Next week students will begin to touch on how artists can use colour purposefully to represent emotions and feelings.

Grade Five

Students in grade 5 explored the idea of pop art last week and created self-portraits using this style. It was great to see the students excited to try a new technique and be so creative.

This week we talk about symmetry asking students to use their knowledge of patterns to create their own mandala. They are all doing such a fantastic job, well done grade 5!

Grade 6

Grade 6 recently finished their galaxy inspired artworks and have this week begun talking about layering, collaging and silhouettes. Using their prior knowledge about texture and overlapping students are using these techniques to create a background using different papers, thinking about what their colour scheme represents.

Next week we finish the grade 6 students will add a silhouette to their background to complete the piece.
