Student Excellence Program

A reminder of some of the exciting things that have been happening at Tarneit Rise:
At Tarneit Rise Primary School, we are committed to extending and challenging our high-achieving learners through a range of enrichment and high-ability opportunities. These programs are designed to build confidence, deepen knowledge, and encourage students to think critically and creatively.
Victorian High-Ability Program (VHAP)
Selected students participate in a 10-week online course in either Mathematics or English, working with expert teachers and peers from across Victoria. Sessions run during school hours and focus on higher-order thinking, problem-solving, and advanced literacy or numeracy concepts.
Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series (VCES)
Students have the chance to attend special workshops and masterclasses with experts in areas such as science, the arts, writing, and mathematics. Recent events have included drawing workshops with Australian artist and author Leigh Hobbs, and creative writing with Australian author Jacqueline Harvey.
Maths Competitions
We proudly enter students into the APSMO Maths Olympiad, Maths Games, and Maths Explorer competitions, where they solve challenging problems across four contests each year. These competitions help students develop resilience, logic, and advanced problem-solving skills.
How Are Students Selected?
Selection is based on a combination of factors including:
✔ Strong academic performance in English or Mathematics
✔ Teacher recommendations and classroom observations
✔ Student interest, motivation, and readiness for challenge
✔ Positive learning behaviours and regular attendance
We aim to give students who demonstrate high potential the opportunity to extend themselves beyond the standard curriculum while ensuring a fair spread of opportunities across year levels.
We are so proud of the way our Tarneit Rise students embrace these challenges and represent our school with creativity, confidence, and perseverance.
Congratulations to Our APSMO Students
This year, a number of our students proudly represented Tarneit Rise Primary School in the APSMO competitions – Olympiads, Maths Games and Maths Explorers. Over the course of the year, these students have completed all four contests, demonstrating persistence, problem-solving, and a love of mathematical challenge.
We are so proud of their commitment and effort across the competitions. Final results will be shared in our Term 4 newsletter once they are released, and awards will be presented at a future school assembly to celebrate their achievements.
Congratulations once again to all of our APSMO participants for the dedication and enthusiasm they have shown throughout the year!
VHAP selection Term 4
Congratulations to all of the students who have been selected for VHAP in English and Maths for Term 4. This is a fantastic opportunity to challenge yourselves, grow your thinking, and connect with like-minded learners from other schools. We look forward to seeing all that you achieve in the program next term.
The Victorian High Ability Program (VHAP) is an initiative by the Victorian Government to support high achieving students in Years 5 to 8 by providing them with advanced learning opportunities beyond the regular curriculum. This program offers online classes, run at school, in Mathematics and English, allowing students to deepen their knowledge, enhance critical thinking, and engage in more complex problem-solving. VHAP is designed to challenge students and foster their academic growth, helping them develop advanced skills and confidence. Participation is by invitation, based on academic performance, cognitive ability, teacher recommendations and engagement and motivation.
Well done to all of the students who have been selected for Term 4!
