Knowledge Building

We have concluded the novel Tom Appleby Convict Boy by Jackie French. The kids were so engaged throughout the novel. Throughout this unit, students have explored Jackie French’s writing at the sentence level, including writing Appositives to add descriptive detail (e.g. “Tom, a young convict boy…”). They have summarised key ideas from an excerpt using the 5Ws (who, what, when, where, why). Students have enjoyed justifying their answers when having discussions in class and have been expected to use the academic language from the novel, with full sentences and a public voice.

We are concluding our term with a Poem I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud by William Wordsworth. The poem’s speaker describes a moment when he felt lonely and aimlessly wandered, only to come across a field of golden daffodils fluttering and dancing in the breeze. The sight of the daffodils fills him with joy and serenity. Even when he is alone or in a contemplative mood later, the memory of the daffodils uplifts his spirits and brings him peace.

Mathematics

In this eight-lesson unit, students are building on prior measurement units, where they developed their understanding of formal metric units of measurement for length, mass and capacity. A key focus in this unit is on identifying suitable units of measurement in different contexts, both for a specific attribute and relevant to the overall size.

Vocabulary

Over the past two weeks the students have been learning 5 new words each week from the novel and fluency reading passages. Students look at the meaning of the words, synonyms and antonyms for the words, and how to use the words in sentences. They then use these words in their writing and reading.

Reminders

  • Student journals will not be sent home this year.  Students will write their reading in the journals when they arrive at school each day.
