Grade 2 Community News

Welcome to spring!

Grade 2 students have been busy…

Reading

We have been focused on the comprehension skill of summarizing. Students have built upon prior learning around main idea to share the important parts of a paragraph or text in their own words. Summarizing is a crucial skill that helps readers to understand what they have read more and remember it better!

We are working our way through Roald Dahl’s George’s Marvellous Medicine and expanding our vocabulary as we go. Ask your learner what colossal means!

In spelling, students have worked hard on spelling words with silent letters, such as the ‘b’ in the ‘thumb’, the ‘k’ in ‘know’ and the ‘w’ in ‘wrong’. In grammar, we have studied past tense verbs, both regular and irregular.

Writing

Continuing our work with persuasive writing, students have explored the topic of getting a class pet. Whether or not they think it would be a good idea to get a class pet, students have used the structure of persuasive writing to draft their own piece of writing. They have even explored the use of rhetorical questions to really make their point.

Maths

Grade 2 students have been working with word problems, and deciding how to solve them, depending on their problem type - total problem or change problem. We have also worked to represent and analyze data, to find the area of a rectangle, and to measure and compare the mass of objects.

Additionally, students have been learning about the characteristics of Australian ecosystems, our states, territories, and bodies of water.
