A Spotlight on Learning

A Spotlight on Learning in the FLC on Springvale  Campus

It has been a jam-packed and incredibly busy Term 3 in the Foundation Learning Centre. We have spent a lot of time having fun whilst engaging in some fantastic learning.

The FLC students celebrated Father’s Day by inviting their dads and special friends into school for a morning tea. There were lots of fun activities and challenges for our special people, such as building a cup tower with one hand while tapping a balloon with the other, trying to get balls through a clown’s mouth and using a straw to blow a ping-pong ball around a pathway. The students made cards and gave gifts to dads, making them feel very special. The dads especially loved hearing their children sing a special song called “Happy Father’s Day”.

This week we have also had an amazing incursion with the Drama Toolbox. It gave the students a chance to act out fairy tales and dress up as different characters from their favourite fairy tales. They had so much fun pretending to be dragons, wizards, wolves and dwarves.

In Reading the FLC students have been reading texts at various levels and identifying their high frequency words. Students can now retell a text in the correct sequence, identify the characters and setting, talk about what they see in the pictures and locate high frequency words in our big books.

In our phonics sessions we are learning about onset and rime with the short vowel sounds. The students are learning to hear sounds and write three letter words independently! How incredible is that!

In Writing the students have been learning to correctly form the letters of the alphabet and write about their experiences. They are also using pictures from story books to create their own short stories. Many students are writing independently using words from charts to support them, while others are copying sentences scribed by the teachers. So amazing!!!

In Mathematics the FLC students have continued to improve their counting skills. They have all been working very hard to achieve their goals and have loved counting everything in sight! Over the last few weeks we have also been focusing on subtraction. Students have been learning to use real life stories to take away a smaller number from a larger one. They are now able to record a subtraction problem in their books, showing vertical recording. What superstars we have in the FLC!
