COLLEGE NEWS

FATHER'S DAY BREAKFAST

The college proudly welcomed fathers, grandfathers, uncles, and the other fatherly figures in our students’ lives at our annual Father’s Day Breakfast on Friday 5 September.

Following a delicious breakfast, our special guest speaker, Roger Rasheed – an elite high-performance coach whose expertise spans both the sporting and corporate worlds – shared his insights into building resilience, leadership, and a winning mindset in high-pressure environments.

As a former professional tennis player turned internationally acclaimed coach, Roger has guided global stars like Lleyton Hewitt, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and Gaël Monfils to peak performance. His sporting career commenced as a footballer before tennis took over from the age of 15. Roger's journey as a professional tennis player was short-lived due to major spinal issues. He retired at age 22.

Roger also presented to our Year 8 cohort after the Breakfast. We thank him for visiting us and for sharing his talents and outlook on life.

MERCY MASS

Mercy Week honours the Sisters of Mercy, their legacy, and everything they have done to improve the lives of people all over the world since Catherine McAuley founded the Order in 1831.

Here at St Joseph’s College, we celebrate our Mercy heritage with a specially dedicated Mercy Mass. On Thursday 4 September, the college gathered in the Sacred Heart Church for this important annual event. Following the Mass – as has been the tradition for decades at St Joseph’s College – all students enjoyed an ice cream in their Homerooms.

YEAR 12 VCE MUSIC CONCERT

The college's two Year 12 VCE Music students performed for students, families, and staff in the Mercy Theatre on the evening of Wednesday 27 August.

Annabelle Munn (cello) and Lucas Tresize (piano) played the pieces they are currently perfecting for their performance exam in October. In the lead-up to this event, both have entertained the college community with two lunchtime concerts in the Chapel on 5 and 19 August.

The opportunity to practise in front of different audiences allows performers to hone their talents, become accustomed to – or rather, immune to – distractions, and share their art with their community. Thanks to Annabelle and Lucas, along with their families, for their wonderful performances.

YEAR 12 SEMINAR DAY

The Class of 2025 enjoyed their second Seminar Day on Tuesday 2 September. Father Rob Galea, the founder of ICON Ministry, a Catholic non-profit global outreach organisation, facilitated a session filled with faith, music, and fun.

The day began with a Teaching Mass in the Sacred Heart Church. Later, everyone relocated to the Mercy Theatre where Fr Rob shared a personal story in which he found his very own 'centre of gravity' in his calling to the priesthood. He also performed some great music, including a moving rendition of 'Don't You Worry Child' – his X-Factor audition song from back in 2015.

After lunch, students reflected on inspirational scripture and played fun games together. They then spent time decorating a commemorative 'stone' as a keepsake to remind them of this very special day.
