National Sorry Day and National Reconciliation We

This week and next week, students across the school will participate in important learning experiences to deepen their understanding of National Sorry Day and National Reconciliation Week. National Sorry Day recognises and acknowledges the pain and suffering experienced by the Stolen Generation, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were removed from their families and communities. Through discussions, stories, videos, and classroom activities, students will explore why these events are significant to Australia’s history and future. Students will also learn about the 1967 Australian referendum and how Australians voted to create greater fairness and recognition for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. In addition, classes will explore Mabo Day and the lasting impact of Eddie Mabo in recognising the land rights of First Nations peoples.

The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2026, “All In,” encourages all Australians to take an active role in reconciliation and work together towards positive change every day. It reminds us that reconciliation is everyone’s responsibility and meaningful change happens when we all contribute. These learning experiences encourage students to reflect on respect, equality, inclusion, and the importance of reconciliation.

We look forward to seeing students thoughtfully engage in discussions and develop a deeper appreciation for the histories, cultures, and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, past and living on Country today.
