Creating a Safe and Respectful Community at BBPS

At Brighton Beach Primary School, we believe every child has the right to feel safe, happy and respected at school. This is something we take very seriously, and it underpins the way we approach relationships, behaviour and wellbeing across our entire school community.

As part of this commitment, our Term 2 wellbeing focus is anti-bullying. While this is a specific focus for the term, the work we do in this space is ongoing and embedded in a whole-school approach.

A Whole-School Approach

At BBPS, anti-bullying is not a one-off lesson or conversation — it is part of our everyday practice. Our school values of respect, relationships and responsibility guide how we interact with one another and help create a culture where students feel connected and supported.

We explicitly teach and model these behaviours through our wellbeing curriculum, including Respectful Relationships and The Resilience Project. These programs focus on building emotional literacy, empathy, positive coping strategies and strong, healthy relationships — all of which are key to preventing bullying behaviours before they occur.

Importantly, this learning is carefully planned through a scope and sequence across all year levels, ensuring that skills are revisited and built upon each year in an age-appropriate way.

Learning Through Conversation and Connection

Throughout the term, classes are engaging in regular circle time discussions, providing students with a safe space to explore important topics such as friendship, inclusion and conflict. These conversations allow us to unpack the language of bullying — helping students understand the difference between conflict, mean behaviour and repeated bullying.

By building this shared understanding, students are better equipped to:

  • recognise bullying behaviours
  • respond appropriately
  • seek help when needed
  • support others in a respectful and empathetic way

Engaging Learning Experiences

To further support this work, we are excited to be hosting a whole-school incursion with Action Education and their Backflips Against Bullying program. This engaging session uses movement, performance and storytelling to capture students’ attention and deliver important anti-bullying messages in a way that resonates with young people. The program is designed around an evidence-based approach and reinforces key strategies for students to respond to bullying and support one another.

Working Together

As with all aspects of student wellbeing, the strongest outcomes occur when school and home work together. Continuing conversations at home — particularly around respectful behaviour, empathy and managing conflict — helps reinforce the messages students are learning at school.

At BBPS, we are committed to developing not only capable learners, but kind, respectful and resilient young people. By taking a proactive, whole-school approach to anti-bullying, we are building a culture where every student feels safe, valued and ready to learn.
