School Wide Positive Behaviour System

Looking at the Broader Picture – Data collection and monitoring

Data monitoring is a critical component of School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) in Department of Education and Training (DET) schools. It enables schools to make informed decisions about student wellbeing, behaviour, and engagement through the systematic collection and analysis of data. SWPBS promotes a proactive and preventative approach to behaviour management, and data monitoring ensures that practices are evidence-based and responsive to student needs.

At Gisborne Secondary College data is monitored in real time, but furthermore a dedicated team meet bi-weekly to review holistic school data patterns, which are commonly collected through behaviour incident reports, attendance records, classroom observations, student surveys, and wellbeing assessments. This information helps school leaders and staff identify patterns and trends in student behaviour across different settings, times, and groups of students. For example, data may reveal that behavioural incidents occur more frequently during recess or in particular learning areas, allowing schools to implement targeted interventions.

Data monitoring also supports the evaluation of school-wide expectations and behaviour strategies. Schools can assess whether positive reinforcement systems, social-emotional learning programs, or targeted supports are improving student outcomes. By regularly reviewing data, staff can determine which strategies are effective and where adjustments are needed. This continuous improvement cycle is central to the SWPBS framework.

Another important aspect of data monitoring is collaboration. Sharing data with the school community can also strengthen transparency and accountability. Importantly, Gisborne Secondary college ensures that all data is managed ethically and confidentially in accordance with departmental policies.

Overall, effective data monitoring in SWPBS helps create safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environments. It allows the College to respond early to emerging issues, celebrate positive behaviour, and ensure that decisions are guided by reliable evidence. Through consistent and strategic use of data, Gisborne Secondary College has enhanced student wellbeing, improved behaviour outcomes, and continues to foster a positive school culture for all students.
