Grade 2

Literacy

This week in Literacy, our Year 2 students explored how to identify and create noun groups to add more detail to their writing, using adjectives and articles to describe people, places and things. In reading, students focused on making personal, text and world connections to deepen their understanding of texts, while continuing to build fluency through echo reading, vocabulary discussions and comprehension activities. During spelling lessons, students investigated different ways to spell the long /e/ sound using “y” and “ey”, practised tricky words including “alright”, “always” and “said”, and learned when to double the final consonant before adding “-ing”. Throughout the week, students participated in engaging discussions, word sorts, sentence dictation and hands-on activities to strengthen their literacy skills across reading, writing and spelling.

Writing

This week in Writing, our Year 2 students used the text as a mentor text to explore how authors use patterns, repeated words and questions to engage readers and build meaning. Students learned how to identify and create simple and compound sentences, using conjunctions such as “and”, “but”, “so” and “or” to combine ideas effectively. Through discussions, shared reading and writing activities, students explored themes of teamwork and problem solving before applying these ideas in their own narrative writing. Throughout the week, students planned and independently wrote stories using picture prompts, focusing on complete sentences, punctuation and re-reading their work to ensure it made sense.

Maths

This week in Mathematics, our Year 2 students explored place value concepts with four-digit numbers using base-10 blocks, Gattegno charts and number lines to build their understanding of thousands, hundreds, tens and ones. Students learned how to compare and order four-digit numbers using the symbols greater than (>) and less than (<), as well as represent and identify numbers in different ways. Throughout the week, students practised rounding three- and four-digit numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000 by applying their place value knowledge and deciding whether numbers should round up or down. Students also strengthened their addition and subtraction skills through hands-on activities using bridge-to-ten strategies, number lines and base-10 materials while solving a range of mathematical problems.
