Principal's Report

Welcome back to Term 2.
We hope everyone had the chance to enjoy some quality time with family and friends over the holiday period. It was fantastic to see students return full of stories and experiences to share. It has also been pleasing to see how quickly most students have settled back into their learning routines, reflecting the strong support and encouragement they receive at home.
A very warm welcome to the new students and families who have joined the Lucas community this term. We are delighted to have you with us and look forward to building a positive and lasting connection.
We also welcome a number of new staff to the Lucas PS family. A very warm welcome to:
Janelle Deb, who will be working in Grade 2C. Janelle comes to us as a very experienced teacher and we look forward to having her on board.
Emma Tate, who will be working in the Year 1 team. Emma is a graduate teacher who has a passion for teaching. We are excited to have Emma as part of our team.
We have a busy and engaging term ahead. Highlights include:
- the Year 3 and 4 camp to Cave Hill Creek
- the Mother’s Day Classic
- the GRIP conference for our student leaders
- a range of sporting opportunities such as Cross Country and Winter sports (Soccer, Netball and AFL).
- a variety of excursions, including visits to the Eureka Centre and the Immigration Museum.
- the Young Authors Program
- a continuation of the Kim Barne program
- the Year 5/6 Swimming Program
- the Semester 1 reporting process
We wish everyone a successful and enjoyable term of learning.
ANZAC DAY
On Sunday April 26, our school captains attended the Arch ANZAC Day service by pinning poppies on a soldier's name. Our Captains represented the school respectfully by laying a wreath as part of the service. This is always a moving experience for our captains and one they always reflect on at the end of Year 6, well done, Adeline, Max, Cameron and Aislinn.
At school on Monday April 27, our leaders also led the school through our very own ANZAC Day Service around the Lone Pine Tree. Student read the poem, In Flanders Field and helped us to understand the various parts to this very important ceremony. Our special guest was Midshipman Declan Casey who shared some of his experiences of being part of the armed forces. Special thanks to Mr Farrington who, once again, played the Last Post and Rouse as part of this service. Congratulations to all students who showed such a high level of respect during this ceremony.
Mother’s Day Classic- Change of Date
Due to inclement weather our Mother’s Day Classic will now be on Monday the 11th of May. This is a special day to help celebrate the mothers and mother figures in our lives. Between 9-11 we are inviting our special guests to come along and join in a special Mother's Day Classic. This is a time for the students to walk with their mother or mother figure and enjoy each other's company and maybe reflect on the relationship they have and how our mothers play such an important role in our lives.
The day will also include a reflective video and a morning tea for all to enjoy.
This promises to be an exciting day for all involved.
Playground Update
The construction phase of our new playground is drawing closer with only a few weeks until the building team move in. We expect the build will take approximately 6 weeks meaning we will be very close to having our new playground for the start of Term 3 (all things going to plan)
During the build, there will be some small traffic disruptions that will need to be navigated but these will be communicated at the time.
Uniform
The beginning of Term 2 usually brings with it a change in the weather which means some really important reminders are required.
- Hats are no longer required at school unless we have an unusually high UV day (at which time we will pop a reminder on Compass), so this is a good chance for the hats to get a good wash and popped in storage until Term 4.
- With the change in weather, we find our lost property box is quickly filled with unnamed items of clothing. We ask everyone to please name everything at school so there is the best chance of the uniform being returned to the rightful owners.
- Dressing appropriately for the changing weather is important to assist with your child’s ability to regulate their body temperature. We encourage all students to have a jumper with them each day to wear outside. Coats are welcome but do not replace jumpers meaning they come off when students come inside.
- We have been noticing lots of jewellery of late. Please check that only stud earrings are worn and that necklaces and bracelets are removed before coming to school. This is primarily a safety issue as students often engage in active play during the day and loose jewellery can get caught, which leads to injury or upset if broken.
Thanks in advance.
