Literacy

Our class have been buzzing with excitement as we dive into our novel study of Roald Dahl’s classic, Matilda. This term, our focus is on the art of narrative writing, using the book’s vivid imagery to help us create our own compelling characters and settings. We particularly loved analysing the formidable Miss Trunchbull; we discovered how Dahl uses precise descriptions like her "small arrogant eyes" and "obstinate chin" to bring a villain to life. After some lively classroom discussions, we all agreed she sounds—and looks—absolutely hideous! We are now channeling that same descriptive energy into our own writing, crafting characters with unique "hooks" and settings that jump off the page. Students also enjoyed drawing their pictures of 'Miss Trunchbull" based on the wonderful use of adjectives by Roald Dahl!

Numeracy- Year 3's

This term, our Year 3 mathematicians have been diving deep into the world of fractions, moving beyond simple shapes to develop a sophisticated understanding of part-whole relationships. To support this, we have been utilising the ‘Think Board’ strategy. A Think Board challenges students to take a single fraction—such as 1/4—and represent it as a symbol, through shaded regions of a shape and as a collection of objects. This multi-modal approach ensures students don't just memorize numbers, but truly "see" the value of a fraction. By visualising how fractions exist in different contexts, our students are building the essential foundation needed for proportional reasoning and future algebraic thinking. This week we have started on Length and are enjoying measuring objects in our classroom and beyond!

Inquiry

In our Inquiry sessions, we have set sail on an exciting investigation into our diverse island neighbours. Students have been exploring the unique cultural identities of Vanuatu, New Zealand, Fiji, and Papua New Guinea, discovering what makes each nation special. Our young explorers have been busy analyzing the symbolism and vibrant colors of each country's national flag and listening to the soaring melodies of their national anthems. From the Southern Cross on the New Zealand flag to the iconic bird of paradise on the Papua New Guinea ensign, we are learning how these symbols tell the story of a nation's history and values. This inquiry is fostering a wonderful sense of global citizenship as we celebrate the rich traditions and voices of our friends in the Pacific!
