👨💼School Captains Recap👩💼
Welcome to the 5/6 cohort, we are the School Captains Knox, Lucy and Hannah. We just wanted to tell you that this term has been one of a kind! There have been so many topics that we have enjoyed. Some of the things we got up to were going on excursions. We went to various places over this term including a place called Science Works. This term has been a blast. We wish everyone the best of luck for Term 3.
Happy Holidays! - EPS School Captains.
🌪️🌧️The Natural Disaster Series - Jackie French and Bruce Whatley 🌊🔥
This term, we have been exploring natural disasters. How and where they occur, the impact they have and how people can prevent and prepare for them. As part of this unit, we have been reading The Natural Disaster Series by Jackie French and Bruce Whatley.
A cyclone is a powerful storm that happens in areas with water over 25.5 degrees. - Madix
I liked how Bruce Whatley has drawn the pictures based on real photos from the natural disaster. - Bentley B
I think the way Bruce Whatley used his left hand (non-dominant hand) to draw the illustrations was really cool. - Beau
✍️Writing- Poetry and Explanation Texts✍️
A world without sleep.
Imagine a world where you cannot sleep.
Think of all the rewards that you could reap.
More time for what you need.
You would feel like you’ve been freed!
You could put time into defeating diseases.
So that there are less coughs and sneezes.
If you work and have no breaks you'll get tired.
If you get too tired you might get fired.
If you have a bad day you have to stay in style and you can't sleep it away.
It might suck but at the end of the day you're gonna have to walk away.
At the beginning you're gonna be mad and snappy.
You might be mad at the start but after a while you'll be happy.
- Ryan
A Sonnet is when 2 lines have the same rhyme sound at the end. Line A and A must rhyme end, and line B and B rhyme at the end. The meter is the rhythm of the poem and each line has four 4 stressed syllables. There are 14 lines in a sonnet. - Ashton, Cody and Lilian.
I liked doing sonnets, I liked the rules and the way my sonnet rhymed. - Quinn M
🌎Earth's Spheres and Natural Disasters🌎
I've been enjoying everything we've been learning. I liked how we read 'Earthquake' and learning about the Earth's spheres. My favourite sphere is the Atmosphere, because it has the Stratosphere, which is where planes fly. - James L
➕➖Maths✖️➗
This term we have learnt lots of interesting and fascinating topics in Maths. Multiples and factors, length, perimeter and area and fractions just to name a few! Students were able to access many engaging tasks that aided and broadened their learning through making fraction walls, comparing fractions with like and unlike denominators and finding equivalent fractions. Finding the fractions of ingredients of a delicious recipe was a massive hit also. Students engaged in making their own Zoo enclosure where they had to design their own Zoo using some area and perimeter parameters that Mr Irwin set for them.
I liked doing the fractional prices activity. I liked how we had to figure out how to find the percentage of prices, and I can use this when I work out prices in a shop. Emmett
🌹ANZAC Day🌹
All classes engaged in learning about the significance of ANZAC day over the first two weeks of the term. Students read and analysed the book 'One Minute's Silence' and other supporting texts throughout the literacy block. All classes made something special to present at our ANZAC day ceremony, all of which were made with incredible dedication and skill. Our students gained an understanding of the hardships of war and had a renewed appreciation of the sacrifices of all service men and women who have helped shape our great country into the lives we can live today.
56C- Our design is a memorial statue with a solider and poppies all around it. There is a little crow because we read a book called 'Crow Country' which acknowledge the Dja Dja Wurrung people who fought in the war. Carolyn's design, Solider/Crow created by Lucy F, 56C created the memorial and poppies, and Lane/Marshall carried the wreath.
💡Circuits and Switches Incursion💡
During the early weeks of Term 2, Grade 5/6 students participated in a circuits and switches incursion that was presented by the Discovery Science and Technology Centre. In this electrifying workshop, students explored how energy flows and powers our world. They built simple circuits, tested conductors and insulators and experimented with switches and lights.
I liked figuring how to create circuits with just a few friends. The most challenging part was trying to get all the parts working together at once. - Hayley P
🏃♀️➡️Cross Country🏃♀️
My highlight was running around the EPS track with James. In Division Cross Country, we were organised into blue and red groups and competed against almost 250 12 year old boys. - Blaine and Bentley
At school, we did our Grade 5/6 track, some of us got into divisional cross country. I was in the blue group, running alongside 200+ 12 year old girls/ My favourite part was meeting up with kids from other schools, that had previously attended EPS. - Hannah
💃Mother's Day💃
On Friday the 9th of May, we celebrated Mother's Day! It was a wonderful afternoon and it was fantastic to celebrate all the wonderful women in our lives and show appreciation to all they do for us. Students and their special people enjoyed an afternoon of snacks, games and all round fun, it was a great time. Thank you to all who were able to come, we look forward to spending time again with you in the future!
I appreciated Mum coming in for the spa day. I got to do her nails, my sister and I gave her a massage and Mum plaited my hair into a French braid. I had a lot of fun and I'm sure my Mum had as much fun as I did. - Chelsea L
🤾Josh King NRL Superstar🤾
During week 8, staff and students had the pleasure of hosting Josh who came to our school to speak to our students around a number of important issues. Josh spoke of his challenges around mental health, and the importance of strategies to maintain healthy habits in his personal life and within his profession. Josh spoke of the negative impacts that social media can have and strategies he has used to mitigate criticism and how destructive comments can affect others. He spoke of the importance of resilience and perseverance, and students had the opportunity to ask a range of questions to help them navigate their own challenges which was much appreciated and beneficial to all. Josh also gave the students the opportunity to engage in a rugby league skills session which was highly engaging.
I enjoyed passing the rugby ball around. He gave us some advice on chasing our dreams and self belief. -Bentley B
🔬🧪🦠Science Works Excursion🔬🧪🦠
On Wednesday the 10th of June, families and students made an early rise for a fun filled education day based at Science works in Melbourne. Students were able to expand their knowledge of physical sciences learnt earlier in the term from our circuits and switches program by engaging in the electricity and circuits lightning theatre. Students were captivated by the giant tesla coil, lightning safety strategies and the high voltage pickled onion experiment. The Earth, Moon and Sun show explored the relative sizes and cycles of the Earth, Moon and Sun and how they give us the day night cycle and the seasons, this provided the students some important background information around this topic for further learning in semester 2.
My favourite part was the Lightning Room. It was really loud at the end and we had to put our hands over our ears.
Maria
🚸Buddies🚸
Throughout Term 2, our Grade 6's have continued to be great buddies, often engaging with our prep students. Our Grade 6's have continued to be a great support, having lunch with our preps on a Friday afternoon, assisting our preps throughout our whole school assemblies as well as engaging in fun activities such as rolling and drawing your favourite monster!
