Learning and Teaching: Literacy

Premier's Reading Challenge

We are excited to announce that our school will be participating in the Premier’s Reading Challenge once again this year! This is a wonderful opportunity to foster a love of reading in our students and celebrate their literacy achievements.

What is the Premier’s Reading Challenge? The Challenge encourages students to read a set number of books between now and the closing date. It is open to all year levels and students can read a combination of Challenge-listed and free-choice books.https://www.vic.gov.au/premiers-reading-challenge-book-lists

This year’s theme is, ‘Stories to Discover. Stories to Tell’. It’s all about discovering new books and the love of reading.

How it works:

  • Each student will be registered for the Challenge through the school.
  • Students are encouraged to read as many books as they can, aiming to complete the required number for their year level. ( listed on the website) https://www.vic.gov.au/premiers-reading-challenge ( log in at VPRC)
  • They will record the books online through the VPRC student portal ( younger students may get help from older siblings or parents) using the link to access the challenge website and then use the username and password to enter the book/s read
  • If the class reads a book together with the class, then the class teacher can enter the book for all students
  • Teachers and staff will help students choose appropriate books and guide them through the process. ( some may be in our library)

What you can do at home:

  • Encourage your child to read daily.
  • Visit the local library together to explore different books.
  • Talk about the books your child is reading and ask questions to deepen their understanding.

We will be celebrating students’ efforts and achievements at the end of the Challenge. Certificates from the Premier will be awarded to those who complete the required reading.

If you have any questions or need support with accessing books or logging reading, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher. Thank you for your support in making reading a joyful and valuable part of your child’s learning journey.

Our Foundation students, with Mrs Hawkins, are exploring the joy of reading in the library, building the skills that support learning for life.

In the quiet of the library, our youngest learners are growing their minds, their language, and their love for reading.
