Respectful Relationships – Problem Solving

At St Mary’s, our students continue to participate in the Respectful Relationships every other Monday, which supports the development of social, emotional and relationship skills that help children thrive both in and out of the classroom.

Our next focus is Problem Solving. Students are learning that problems are a normal part of everyday life and that there are positive, respectful and safe ways to respond to challenges and conflict. Through age-appropriate discussions, role plays, collaborative activities and classroom conversations, students are developing important strategies to help them think through problems calmly and confidently.

Across all year levels, students are exploring how to:

  • identify and describe a problem clearly
  • recognise and manage emotions during challenging situations
  • consider different perspectives and feelings
  • brainstorm possible solutions
  • predict consequences of choices
  • work cooperatively and respectfully with others
  • seek help when needed

These skills are an important part of building resilience, empathy and emotional intelligence. By learning effective problem-solving strategies, students become better equipped to manage friendships, navigate disagreements, make thoughtful decisions and contribute positively to our school community.

The Respectful Relationships curriculum supports students to develop strong communication skills, positive relationships and a sense of belonging. We encourage families to continue these conversations at home by talking with children about ways they solve problems, manage emotions and show respect to others in everyday situations.
