 5/6 CLASSROOM

We have had a great fortnight in 5/6, filled with lots of learning, teamwork and positive participation across all areas of the classroom. Students have continued to show great persistence with their learning tasks, supported one another during group activities and demonstrated our school values throughout the fortnight. It has been wonderful to see the class working collaboratively, encouraging each other and taking pride in their learning. We are very proud of the effort and teamwork being shown by all students.

English

In English, students have begun writing a factual recount on the 1967 Referendum. It is a challenging topic in terms of background knowledge and understanding, but students have been persisting with their learning, building their understanding of the events and developing their knowledge to support their writing. SpellEx has also been going well, with students focusing on the different ways to spell the vowel sounds /a/, /e/ and /i/, along with learning helpful grapheme patterns for the ends of words and syllables. Our class text, Us Mob Walawurru, is continuing to spark thoughtful discussions, with students deepening their understanding of the characters, their actions and the different contexts within the story.

Maths

In Maths, students have been focusing on fractions and equivalent fractions, while also revising important mathematical vocabulary. It has been pleasing to see students showing greater understanding and confidence during our Daily Reviews, particularly with topics that have been covered earlier in the year. The regular revision is helping students strengthen their understanding and make connections across different areas of Maths. As we move towards the end of the semester, we are beginning to prepare for upcoming assessments and encouraging students to continue applying their knowledge and strategies across a range of tasks.

Art

Students have now completed their individual sections of the artwork and we are currently working on bringing the collaborative piece together. It has been exciting to see the artwork begin to take shape as each section is joined, highlighting the effort and teamwork involved in creating a large-scale piece as a class. Students have taken great pride in contributing their part and are enjoying seeing how their individual work combines to create the final artwork inspired by Looking West, Spring Gap by Albert Namatjira.

Students have also been experimenting with patterns and line design, creating their own mandalas using a range of different lines, shapes and repeating patterns. It has been wonderful to see the creativity and individuality within each piece, with students carefully applying different techniques to make their artwork unique. The finished pieces look amazing and have brightened our classroom displays beautifully.

Our Grade 5/6 students are eagerly counting down to camp next week as they prepare for three days of fun, challenge and teamwork at Burnside Camp in Anglesea alongside Holy Rosary Heathcote.

Students will have the opportunity to take part in a range of exciting activities designed to build confidence, resilience, and collaboration. Throughout the camp, students will be encouraged to step outside their comfort zones, support one another, and create lasting memories with their peers.

Alongside the organised activities, there will also be time for games, shared meals, beach experiences and plenty of opportunities to strengthen friendships and enjoy time together away from the classroom.

We know the students are going to have an amazing experience and we look forward to sharing some highlights from camp in future newsletters and on our school Facebook page throughout the week!

Good luck to Archie, Liam and Isaac as they progress to the next level of Cross-Country competition next Wednesday in Shepparton. We are incredibly proud of their efforts, determination, and sportsmanship throughout the Cross Country season so far.

Representing St Mary’s at this level is a fantastic achievement and a reflection of the hard work and persistence they have shown. We wish all three students the very best as they compete and know they will do our school proud.
