F/1/2 CLASSROOM

We have had another busy few weeks in the F/1/2 classroom, with students continuing to show enthusiasm, kindness, and persistence in their learning. It has been wonderful to see the confidence of students continue to grow so rapidly across all learning areas, as well as the care they show towards one another each day.
In Literacy, our Foundation students have continued making fantastic progress with their reading and writing skills. Students are now learning and recognising more sounds and letters and are beginning to apply this knowledge when reading and spelling simple words independently. It has been exciting to see the growing confidence students are showing during our morning reading sessions.
Our Year 1 students have been revising and consolidating their understanding of digraphs, homophones, tricky words and sentence writing. Year 2 students have been extending their spelling knowledge through learning different spelling patterns and developing their fluency, comprehension and writing skills. Over the past fortnight, students have also enjoyed working with the mentor texts Superworm, My Two Blankets, and Chooks in Dinner Suits, using these texts to support their reading and writing learning.
In Mathematics, Foundation students have continued exploring part-whole concepts and making number pairs to 10. Year 1 students have been building their understanding of place value and applying this knowledge to solve problems, while Year 2 students have recently begun a new Measurement unit focused on using informal units to measure length. Students across all year levels have been showing increasing confidence when explaining their mathematical thinking and strategies.
In Inquiry, students have continued learning about places and maps. Students enjoyed exploring maps of Rushworth and discussing how places are named and why places are important to different people. We also introduced discussions about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander place names and the significance of Country.
In Art, students particularly enjoyed creating their own “magic” artwork inspired by Possum Magic, using white crayon and watercolours to make hidden drawings appear.
This week, students were fortunate to begin working with Melbourne artists from Under the Creative Hood as part of our exciting new creative arts partnership program. Students have been participating in workshops exploring music, puppetry, storytelling, and visual arts. It has been wonderful to see students trying new experiences, building confidence, and expressing their creativity in different ways.
