Year 7 Pillars Experience
In Week 3, the Year 7 students embarked on their much-anticipated Pillars Experience, a program designed to foster personal growth, teamwork and a deeper understanding of the values and traditions of St Mary’s College. During the four days, students participated in a variety of activities, including an overnight stay at Orana, high and low ropes courses at Fusion, and a Spirituality Day at school. These experiences provided opportunities for students to step outside their comfort zones, build resilience and connect with their peers and the ethos of St Mary’s College.
The overnight stay at Orana encouraged students to develop independence and responsibility while engaging in outdoor activities, including the Clarence Coastal Trail Walk and team-building exercises such as 'Minefield' and 'Pebble Run' to promote cooperation and problem-solving. The overnight component also allowed students to strengthen friendships and develop a sense of camaraderie as they navigated the challenges and rewards of spending a night away from home.
The adventure continued with the high and low ropes courses at Fusion, a physically and mentally challenging experience designed to test courage, communication and perseverance. The high ropes course required students to push past their fears and trust in both themselves and their classmates for support. These activities reinforced the importance of trust, encouragement and resilience—key attributes that students can apply both in and out of the classroom. Through these shared challenges, students also forged new connections and strengthened existing friendships.
The final component of the Pillars Experience was the Spirituality Day, held at St Mary’s College. This day was dedicated to deepening students’ understanding of the school’s rich history and the legacy of the Presentation Sisters. Through interactive sessions, storytelling and reflection, students explored the values of compassion, service and faith that underpin the College’s identity. They learned about the inspiring work of the Presentation Sisters and the ways in which their mission continues to shape the school community.
The Year 7 Pillars Experience was a memorable and transformative journey for all involved. It provided students with invaluable lessons in teamwork, resilience and self-discovery—lessons that will undoubtedly stay with them as they continue their journey at St Mary’s College.
Last but not least, a heartfelt thank you goes out to the dedicated staff who made this week possible, offering their time, guidance and encouragement to ensure the success of the program. Your support and commitment played a crucial role in making the Pillars Experience both meaningful and unforgettable for the students. Thank you!

The Design and Production (Wood 2) course teaches the basics of using power tools and crafting simple wooden projects for the home. Students learn how to plan and bring their design and production projects to life, with the course opening pathways into Housing and Design 3, VET and tertiary study.
