Staff Spotlight | Phoebe Humphreys

Miss Phoebe Humphreys, College House Leader and HPE Teacher
Introducing Miss Phoebe Humphreys, one of our fantastic secondary teachers. An avid sports enthusiast, Miss Humphreys recently relocated to Hobart from England. Since joining St Mary's College earlier this year, she has already made her presence felt in the Senior School as an HPE teacher and proud College House leader. Her infectious energy and dedication to health and physical education inspire students to lead active and healthy lives.
What makes St Mary's College special?
Students and staff have created such a welcoming and friendly environment. It is so lovely to have joined such a wonderful community.
What do you love about your subjects/teaching?
Every day is different here at St Mary's; it is definitely a fun job that keeps you on your toes! The main thing I love is being able to explore my passion for sport and encourage students to find their own passions within the subject.
What inspired you to choose teaching as a career path?
I have played sports ever since I can remember. My mum was a huge advocate for that, being a PE teacher herself (my icon!). I knew that I wanted my future career to involve sport and quickly realised that I would not be a professional athlete anytime soon! I started doing some coaching as a student at school and really enjoyed it... that then sparked the idea of teaching.
How would you define good health and wellbeing?
Good health and wellbeing to me means being able to live your simple everyday life with ease and happiness.
What can you be found doing when you're not teaching?
Since moving to Australia, I have tried to make the most of the weather and amazing beaches! So, usually, I am running or out for a walk, trying to explore as much as possible.
What sport/s did you play during your schooling days?
I tried to join every sports team possible at school (which I did!). But I mainly focused on netball, swimming and athletics in high school.
If you could meet any sports legend, who would it be and what would you ask them?
I would love to meet Simone Biles, not only due to the huge success she has experienced, being the most decorated gymnast of all time, but also how she overcame such huge obstacles whilst in the spotlight. I recently watched her Netflix documentary, which was really inspiring.
