We have had a really great fortnight of learning in the Grade 2/3 space. In reading we have been learning how to make connections with texts and explain how texts give meaning to us and the world around us. When reading at home, feel free to ask your child, if they have any connections to the book that you are reading, such as a similar experience or having used seen an item that they read about. In math we have been looking at how numbers can be broken up into smaller parts and expanded into their base 10 values. We have been playing a lot of games in mathematics!
We have continued to focus on narratives writing, exploring how to write a good introduction to a story through planning and developing ideas before we start writing. Improvements to our writing have been made by considering vocabulary we are using. Descriptive words have been added to writing, and the construction of super sentences have prompted thinking for our writing as well. Finally, summarizing texts has supported our writing by identifying how authors have constructed interesting characters, settings and situations for their stories.
Regarding Grade 3 students
NAPLAN is happening in the next week for all students and began on the 12th of March. We have done preparation in class to support students with NAPLAN including familiarisations with the program, as well as focus on writing narratives in class. Students should feel ready to have a go and possibly interested in the process. If you child becomes stressed or uncertain regarding NAPLAN, please contact the school so that we can work with you and your child to maintain a positive view of NAPLAN testing. NAPLAN is a test on one day, not a test that defines a student or child, please be sure to ask what your child wrote about in their NAPLAN writing this week.
Kids ROAR!
Last week we had the 'Kids ROAR' program visit us. Students discussed their bodies and consent and were invited to consider who their safe people were to discuss when they were feeling stressed or unsafe. Hopefully, their 'safe' hand is somewhere prominent in your home to discuss what they learned and who to talk to if they are ever worried.
School Photos
Thanks to all the parents who spent time prepping their precious children ready for school photos, it was great to see the polish that our students had for the day. I am sure that when the photos are ready in a few weeks they will look spectacular!
Spelling
2/3 students are starting to look at spelling rules, different sounds and letter combinations to make those sounds. Student's will be given new words each Friday and practicing and completing further learning during the following week. If interested, parents might like to support their child by looking over the spelling list, asking them the tricky sound to spell and practicing with them for 5 or 10 minutes each day over the weekend. There is no obligation on this, only an invitation. Spelling list will be in diaries on Fridays.
Week 7 'ai' as in 'snail'
Week 8 'ur' as in 'fur'
Week 9 'ow' as in 'snow'
Library
Please remind your child to return their library books so that they can borrow new books each week. students have access to the school library each week on Thursdays. Students also have access to the mobile Library each Monday. If you child does not have a public library card you can ask for a form from your classroom teacher, so that one can be organised.
Reading & Diaries
Thank you for those parents that have been sending students to school with their readers and diaries. It has been really helpful and much appreciated. Some students seem to have misplaced their diaries. If you could assist them in finding them that would be great. If they are lost, please communicate and we will double check at school as well. Mr. Rennie and Mrs. McAsey are endeavoring to check each diary each week at least once, but this is difficult to do if diaries to not regularly come to school.
Also, students are being encouraged to take 2 readers home, changing one each day. This will mean that they are rereading a book and reading a new book each night. Students do not have to take two books home; the expectation is at least one.
Volunteering
As previously communicated, we are looking for volunteers starting next week to support both classes with reading on Tuesday to Friday each week. if you are interested in supporting the 2/3 classes, please ensure that you have a current working with children check and have completed the volunteer induction. If you were unable to attend, please connect with Jenny.
