Prep Guy

We have continued to be very busy learning, making friends and having fun in Prep Guy.

In Literacy, we have learnt about more letters of the alphabet and their most common sounds. Students have been identifying items beginning with the letter and sound, labelling these items, using their knowledge of sounds and which letters make the sounds they are hearing when saying words aloud. Your child will bring home revision activities on a Friday. Please ask them to show you their knowledge of the letters we have learnt and see if they can remember the most common sound. We have also been learning about rhyming words, syllables and alliteration. Students are loving visiting the Mobile Library borrowing books to take home and use in the classroom in their book boxes. Please remember to return these books every Monday, so more can be borrowed. We have also been working on reading and spelling our heart words which have gone home. Ask students to play 'beat the teacher/ parent' with you to encourage your child to learn these words. They LOVE this game. So far we have learnt how to read and spell the heart words I, the, my, he, she, we, was, do and to. Don't forget to sign your child's reading diary every time they read their take home reader to you. All students have been signed up to Epic and I have assigned them videos, fiction and nonfiction books, decodable readers and texts to listen to as read aloud. Their log ins have been stuck in their reading diaries if you would like to use this platform at home.

In Numeracy we have continued working on numbers to 20, writing the numeral, the matching word form, odd and even numbers, numbers before or after a given number and ordinal number such as 1st, 2nd or 3rd. We have also been placing  a set of numbers such as 1, 8, 3 and 2 in order from the smallest number to the largest. Give your child  a few numbers to 20 and ask them to order from smallest to largest number to reinforce our learning at school. Don't forget your child has log in details to practise these skills at home in Mathletics and My Numeracy.

Prep Guy Students Of The Week

Congratulations to Roy and Senumi who were chosen last week as our Students Of The Week for taking responsibility for their own learning completing set tasks in Mathletics. Roy and Senumi have both earnt their bronze awards in Mathletics, practising what we are learning at school using this platform. Roy received a Bronze 1 and 11 certificates and Senumi was awarded her Bronze 1 certificate. Well done Roy and Senumi; Prep Guy are super duper proud of you.

This week Noah D and Grace were chosen. Noah D was chosen for showing all of our school values, listening respectfully, never giving up, taking on feedback and trying his personal best. Well done Noah D. Grace was chosen for showing resilience; continuing to learn the letters of the alphabet and their most common sound. She never gives up. Prep Guy are so proud of you all.

A special mention to the following students for reaching 25 nights of reading.

Well done to Willow, Senumi, Roy, Noah H, Maggie, Carlee, Audrey, Beau, Elsie, Noah D and Jackson. These students were acknowledged in assembly with a certificate. I wonder who will win our Reading Nights Competition?

Week 4 and 5 have been wonderful in Prep and Grade One!

We are learning about being a Respectful Rabbit - "Treating others the way you want to be treated", Responsible Rhino - "Doing the right thing and being trustworthy" and Resilient Racoon - "The power to bounce back". Each students collects tokens for demonstrating these values or showing respect, responsibility and/ or resilience and can save or spend these tokens at our Token Shop.

Prep/ Grade 1 - Miss Stoll

In Phonics and English, we have learnt about letters, sounds, letter formation and drawing and/ or writing and labelling pictures about our focus sounds. Over the last two weeks me met Yy (Yasmin yak), Rr (Roxy Rabbit), Ee (Eddy elephant), Qq (queenie quail), Zz (Zoe zebra) and Jj (Jack jellyfish). We love reading Milo's Birthday Surprise are so excited to see how the rest of the story unfolds as we continue exploring the letters of the alphabet. Whilst learning about new sounds, we have practiced writing the letters during rainbow writing sessions, where students trace the upper and lower case focus letter. Students have explored words that begin with these sounds, and extended this learning into writing sentences for our Grade Ones. We are beginning to decode, read, spell and write words linked to our learnt sounds. Our Grade Ones are being extended to explore different ways to read and write these sounds, such as going for a 'word hunt' in our classroom library, and seeing where we we can find out sounds at the beginning middle and end of words.

In Maths, we have begun exploring place value by investigating numbers 0 (zero) to 20 (twenty), including teen numbers, both in written and numerical format. We have used various materials, such as MAB blocks, Unifix coloured blocks, drawings, natural resources and number formation activities to strengthen our understanding of these numbers. We have been counting up and back from these numbers, what comes before and after, if they are an "even Steven" or "odd Todd" number and have begun looking at our hundreds chart to explore counting up from zero and skip counting by tens. Our Grade Ones are strengthening their ability to read and write these numbers in the worded form

Our Student Achievers this fortnight are Bodhi and Esme.

Bodhi embraces each day with a positive attitude and with a smile on his face. We can always count on him to uplift others, role-model respect, responsibility and resilience and choose kindness each and everyday. Bodhi's fun, cheeky, caring and bright personality continues to grow and shine in our classroom and we can't wait to see what you'll continue to achieve this year.

Esme tackles each day with a smile on her face and desire to learn and grow. Esme's ability to support and include others has made her a very adored member of our class. I can always count on you to make your peers smile, laugh or feel cared for Esme. You're building your resilience so much, you're using your words in times of overwhelm or frustration so incredibly well and we are so proud of you.

To all my creative, smart, kind and inspiring students, keep working hard and believing in yourself, I am so incredibly proud of all of you.

Bodhi and Esme will receive their Student Achiever awards at Assembly in Week 8, assembly starts at 3:10pm on a Friday (fortnightly).

Next week and in week 9, I will be meeting with most families for our Parent Teacher Talks. This is a quick ten minute talk to converse about your child, how they are settling into Prep or Grade 1, how they're going with their learning and any other important information. Please note, I will have alarms set so as to not go over time, if anything needs to be discussed in addition to our ten minute meeting, please email me.

If you would like to discuss anything relating to your child's learning, wellbeing, growth or development, please come and see me to organise a time, alternatively, you can email me at kate.stoll@education.vic.gov.au

Thank-you,

Kate (Miss Stoll).

Our Learning

In Reading, we focus on a new book each week. We have looked at the books "The Grouchy Ladybug" and " Nouns and Verbs, Have a Field Day".  We have been looking at Plurals that end in -s and - es. Example: Cat / Cats, Pot / Pots, Lunch / Lunches, and Fox / Foxes.

In Writing, we have been learning about Nouns, Verbs and Adjectives and how we use them in our writing.

In Numeracy we have started a new topic: Time, we are currently looking at Days of the Week and the Months of the Year. We have been talking about our Seasons and decided as a class that our weather is very confused as we are in Autum, but it still feels like Summer.

With the weather still being so warm, please remember your child still needs a hat and water for school.

Student Achiever Awards

Last week's Student Achiever was Taz. Taz is a kind and respectful student in class and a great helper. Well Done Taz!
