Specialist Classes

Japanese

Students will learn words for days of the week in Japanese. Students will also learn JSL (Japanese Sign Language) for the words to explore word origins and support recall. Japanese sentence patterns with three parts will be used, such as “Today is Monday.”  We will utilize flashcards and slide shows to support our learning. Students will also interact with each other in communication games and songs which mimic authentic pronunciation of Japanese. Students will explore Japanese characters used to read and write words for the days of the week in Japanese.

The students in Years 1&2 will build on their skills in Collage for their Visual Arts work in Term 3. Year 1&2 students will explore tearing and cutting different shapes, cutting and fringing paper, tearing and scrunching paper into different sizes, weaving paper through paper, double folding and cutting fine lengths.

The students will be using their hands, scissors and glue for this exploration, with a focus on safely using these sorts of tools both in and out of the Visual Arts space.

Physical Education

Students will focus on the transition toward hand-striking techniques while being introduced to specialised implements such as plastic paddles.

Key learning activities throughout the term include:

  • Weeks 1–3: Catching and throwing playground balls following a single bounce. Students will practice striking foam balls along the ground using open palms and sweeping them with short paddles.
  • Weeks 4–7: Underarm throwing over agility hurdles to partners. Students will engage in drop-bounce-striking against brick walls and continuous routines using fences to toss and catch low-compression balls over nets.
  • Weeks 8–10: Introduction to outdoor 4-square down-ball. Activities include cooperative partner rolling and trapping with paddles, concluding with a target circuit finale featuring fence-hitting and mini-rallies.
